Tiopex and night vision

I was diagnosed with glaucoma last March and prescribed Tiopex eye drops, one drop in each eye once a day. Since the nights have got darker I notice that my vision is poor when driving at night Yesterday in the cinema I could not read extracts from a notebook when they appeared on a screen - they were completely out of focus. I understand night blindness can be a side effect of Tiopex. I am trying to get advice from my consultant but can anyone advise or comment in the meantime?

I have been on tropic for 18 months with no effect on my vision. However, I was on rhopressa for 5 weeks and my vision went from 20/20 to 20/100. I have been off of rhopressa for 3 weeks and my vision is much improved but not 100%. I asked my doctor if this is common and he said everyone responds differently to drops. I would report it but would not worry too much.

Thank you for replying. Im hoping a change of medication may help because the thought of not being able to drive at night is depressing.

Hi Eyeworrier,

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure this will be relevant but when do you administer your eye drops?

I was told that Tiopex has such an effect on eye pressure that it has to be taken first thing in the morning or pressures can drop too low....

I take it in the morning.

I take Tiopex (1 drop in the morning). Since taking them (started Jan 2020) I find driving in the dark more difficult but for me it is the fact the lights on cars coming towards me seem brighter. However, I put this down to me getting older as my parents, and parents in law all said they suffered the same when they got older and none of them suffered from glaucoma.

I have glaucoma and early cataract in one eye, (the other cataract has been removed), and I have had difficulty driving in the dark for some years, mainly because all lights seem to break up into dazzling bits. My optician said this was due to the cataracts, but I think also due to glaucoma. The result is that I no longer drive at night as I do not feel safe. I don't use Tiopex, or timolol.... brominidine is the only thing I can tolerate.

Good luck if you can solve this problem.

Thank you for this. What puzzles me is the out of focus issue in the cinema.

stones, have you had a yag on the eye where the cataract was removed? I had the same problem with lights until the yag on both of my post cataract eyes.

in reply toFloaters

Yes, had YAG which didn't work....later followed by goniotomy and cataract removal which did work; but I haven't noticed any improvement as regards driving.

Hi Eyeworrier (great name!)Sorry I'm late to the party on this post but wanted to let you know I couldn't get along with Tiopex at all! They blurred my vision so badly I found it terrifying to drive at night - all the headlights were streaked all over the place!! As it's mostly dark when I travel to and from work this was impossible for me. Also during the day I had floaters and what looked like little 'worms' crawling across my vision! I'm on Trusopt now and much better😁

Thank you for this. It turned out I needed new prescription lenses which have helped but like you I find glare ( and floaters!) a nuisance. I'll ask about Trusopt at my next check up. Good wishes.
