I had my 1st trabeculectomy 8 weeks ago and the vision in my left eye is still very blurry. I am due to have a trab in my right eye a week tomorrow (on 18th Nov). Although my consultant is pleased with my progress, I am really concerned that it will be very debilitating if I go ahead with the op. I rang the hospital eye clinic on Friday with my concerns and they suggested that I go to my local optician and see if my prescription has changed (which it has - a lot more than they would have expected) and to contact them if it has. Not only is the vision in my left eye a lot worse, my retina has gone from being smooth to undulating which the optician had never seen before. I am feeling so stressed and anxious. I will be phoning the hospital tomorrow but I wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation, or can offer any advice. Thank you
Blurry vision: I had my 1st trabeculectomy... - Glaucoma UK
Blurry vision
Could it be macula oedema? I had a cataract and I stent operation and the vision was blurred. It was picked up by an optician on a scan. But the scan showed waves. It was treated with anti inflammatory drops.
I would advise going for a second opinion, pay privately if necessary, it is your eyesight do not rush into a second operation until you are more confident of the outcome.
the macula oedema is a possibility. The distortion of the cornea, by the surgery, will produce a refraction change - for several days after my Rt eye trab I had 7 dioptres of astigmatism ! But a more serious aspect is the effect of the anaesthetic. If only exxternally applied drops are used, rarely a problem. But a retrobulbar (behind the eye) injection can permanently damage the optic nerve especially if already weakened by glaucoma. Only time will tell if this has happened, but it is worth discussing this with the surgeon regarding your next trab.
As Nonswimmer says definitely get a second opinion - privately if necessary. I also wonder what your eye pressure is ? I suffered similar symptoms after my trab 15 months ago . Although my pressure was down below 3 ( causing the undulating retina which was only picked up by my local optician ) my consultant continued to say that everything was fine - which it clearly wasn't ! I took a second opinion and had a revision op 8 weeks ago from which I am still recovering . Another thought may be that if you have been on Atropine or similar for a prolonged period your vision may take a longer time to recover. Unless you are an emergency I certainly think you need to regain useful vision in the first eye before having an op on the second .
Hi pjhl. Thank you for your reply and advice. I have decided to seek a second opinion - privately if necessary, even if I can't really afford it. Since the trab, my eye pressure has been around 2-3, which is very low, however, because I had Eye Lasik Eye Surgery in 2016 (which made my corneas really thin) they have to add on approx. 7 - so my eye pressure is about 10. I had to have the trab urgently as my consultant said I would lose sight in my left eye within the year, and I may have max. 3 years left in my other eye. For info, the eye drops I've been taking are Chloramphenicol (for 1 month) and Dexamethasone (currently twice a day). My main concern is that my vision may never improve in my left eye. Anyway, having rung the eye clinic this morning, they have offered me an appointment in their emergency eye clinic tomorrow. Fingers crossed. Thanks again.
I had similar happen to me in 2023 after a trab. My eye developed macular folds and the pressure dropped to 4 and is now 6. I was given Atropine for quite a few weeks. I also had an injection of gel (I think it was called vitreous gel) which didn’t make it any better or worse. Over a year later my eye is still blurry. It has improved as I can now see objects before all I could see was light and dark. I now rely on my other eye and so I decided not to have surgery on it. My advice would be not to do your other eye until your first one is sorted. I will not be having my second eye done.
I had mild cataract before i had a presserflo surgery. Presserflo surgery had worsen my cataract and my vision has gone really blurry. I am now waiting to have my cataract surgery and hoping the vision will get better. I wonder if it is possible that your blurry vision caused by cataract? Hooe it will be sorted soon, all the best.
Thank you for your response. Very helpful 🙏
I had a cataract operation in my one good eye in 2012 to lower the eye pressure followed by SLT six months later, a second opinion was to me very much worth while.
