Steroid eye drops

Do most people with glaucoma that have a cataract operation have their steroid eye drops tapered off after using them four times a day for two weeks.I am really worried as I have been told by the consultant not to do this to carry on four times a day for another two weeks . I would be very grateful to hear of other peoples experience as I have read so much about the pressure rising and tapering off the drops .Has anyone else been told not to do this.

Hi booktwo

It depends on the situation.

I haven't had a cataract op but am on steroid drops after a trabeculectomy. I was on steroid drops 8 times a day for about a month before they started to taper off.

The doctor will make decisions based on what's needed in your situation.

Hope the cataract op made things better for you.

Hello Booktwo, The dexamethasone (steroid) eye drops dosage is varied from consultant to consultant . e.g. 6 times a day for 1 week -> reduce 4 times a day for 2 weeks -> 2 times a day for 2 weeks etc. Some 4 times a day for 4 weeks etc. You do not need to worry about it. It depends on case by case. . Please follow your consultant's instructions. With best wishes.

Thank you so much it seems that all these consultants have different views I always thought the drops should be tapered off but that doesn't always seem to be the case.

when they decide it is time to take you off the steroid then you will probably be tapered off instead of just stopping.

Well I have been told four times a day for four weeks no tapering . It seem every one is told different things.

The great danger of cortisone is a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. This can be very dangerous and very difficult to treat. The sooner you get of steroid drops the better.

Yes this is what I understand from the research I have read I am concerned because my pressure went up after the cataract operation from 20to 34 only because I wasn't given the tablets to reduce the pressure ,and now they seem unconcerned about the steroids and have told me not to taper them. I asked for a pressure check and am having that tomorrow .Thank you for your reply

Hi. When I had my cataract surgery, I used the steroid drops three times a day for about 3-4 weeks and then they were stopped. There was no tapering off. Best to go with your consultant's advice. x

It seems that people are told very different things by different consultants. Thanks for your reply
