Just to let you know that I had the shunt inserted under a local anaesthetic yesterday. Very little discomfort and the surgeon was pleased with a pressure of 10 today. The nurse removed the protective shield and bathed the eye which felt wonderful. The shield is then only used at night to protect the eye from accidental rubbing etc . Things do look a bit distorted at first , but apparently this will gradually improve.
Steroid drops are used 2 hourly and antibiotic drops 4 hourly to calm inflammation and prevent infection. For those with allergies to preservatives both drops are available preservative free.
Do check you have been provided with enough eye drops until you can get to your G.P or pharmacy . I only have 5 days of antibiotics although told I had 2 weeks worth.... so best to count them if individual doses.
One important thing to remember ..check lights are good at home especially at night. We organised some big nightlights, so I did not fall. With one eye covered it does mean you need more lighting. Also worthwhile looking around for doorstops or rugs which may be trip hazzards.
Thank you so much for all your good wishes.

Thank you so much for all your good wishes. Now 3 days post op and my eye feels and looks better although vision still a bit odd but improving. Easier now to know the drops are going in as they feel cooler, maybe because the eye is less inflammed. The drops do take a lot of time , I counted 20 separate drops yesterday, including the other eye's routine glaucoma drops. I definitely need to write it all down and put different coloured tape on each bottle top.
Try hard to remember not to bend over and keep my head higher than my heart.
I inherited a "helping hand " (sometimes used to pick up litter ) it is so useful.
Also have a shampoo bar so I can put it in the soap dish in the shower.
A small stool is good so I can get down low if necessary, bending knees very oddly outwards!
Try and do any dusty or heavy housework before the op.
A good supply of micropore tape is needed for fixing the eye shield at night.
Make sure you know where to phone if you have problems post op , a 24 hr contact.
Also ask if the hospital will supply any drops that the G.P surgery may have difficulties with obtaining.
One of the Doctors told me that stents and shunts were very similar , but I think there are several different types. All on the internet.
