Group B Strep - No Symptoms...

I was recently diagnosed as a carrier of Group B Strep after loosing my twins at 20 weeks. I wonder if anyone has had this experience like mine because I had no symptoms. The only problem I had was when I went into labour early with my son. Then two days later my body went into septic shock and then within three hours I went into labour with my daughter who was also still born. The post mortem results showed I was a carrier of Group B Strep and both my children had pneumonia, with infected placentas. We are trying to find answers for future pregnancies but with no symptoms, it is difficult to diagnose.

I'm so sorry to read what happened, what sadness. I've sent you an email today which, I'm afraid, won't give you definitive answers.

We would strongly suggest you see a Consultant Obstetrician at booking (or before) to go through in detail your full obstetric and gynaecological history. Although group B Strep can and does cause premature labour, it really doesn't do so very often - sometimes it can be opportunistic, taking advantage of something else that's happening, rather than causative. However, clearly you need to work closely with your health team to ensure that all angles are addressed, not just the GBS one.

I am so sorry - embarking on another pregnancy after loss is hard. I'm sure other mums within this community will be able to share their experiences. At GBSS, we know of so very many healthy babies born after a sibling died from GBS infection (including one of mine), so please don't give up hope.
