My daughter is almost 2 years old and I still remember the day she was born as if was yesterday but not for good reasons. My daughter Amina was born with strep b, after my delivery I was taken to the ward to wait for a bed, while there Amina was checked by a doctor who told me they needed to take to intensive care as she was having problems breathing. We were never told it my be strep b. later that night she was taken worse and had to be ventilated. On day 2 we were told it was step b and the doctor told I had given it to her. I had never heard of it. All I knew was my world was falling apart my baby was very ill and they didn't know if she would make it and it was my fault. On day 4 we had break through my little fighter was fighting. After 2 weeks in hospital I was finally able to take my baby home. I also found out while I was in hospital that I had been tested for strep b 2 weeks before I had Amina and it had shown that I had strep b. My notes had not been updated with this information so I was not treated for strep b during labour. I was told by thr hospital that there would be an investigation and I would be told outcome. I have never heard from the hospital. I'm just so lucky to have a healthy 2 year old.

Sorry to hear you daughter was born with strep b, the hospital were really slack in not checking your notes, if only they had done what they were meant to, I would be writting to the hospital to find out what the outcome of the investigation was and to make sure they have learnt from the mistake and it won't be repeated. Thankfully your daugter made a full recovery.

The same thing happened with my daughter only 3 weeks ago, she was born and rushed straight off to special care and they started the antibiotics straight away as she also asperated meconium she wasnt improving in special care and wasnt breathing on her own, so they tested her for it and it came back positive so she continued on the antibiotics for 7 days but i later found out that when i went up to the hospital with suspected waters going early they should have swabbed me then and they would have found the strep b but they didnt and instead my daughter contracted it! its absolutely awlful and you really do feel like its all your fault when they say its passed on from the mother, my heart sank when they said that and not one midwife told me during my antenatal appointments about group b strep i had never heard of it untill the doctor told me he was testing my daughter for it and then i looked it up on google to find out myself exactly what it is! glad to hear your daughter is better and thankfully so is mine! its really put me off having anymore children to have to go through that again i know i couldnt do it!

3102012 Congratulations on your daughter's birth and I'm so pleased to hear she's fine now after being ill with GBS infection. It's appalling that expectant parents aren't told about group B Strep during pregnancy - clearly at GBSS we want that to change!

Please don't let this put you off having more children! Babies are born all the time fit and healthy and free from GBS after older siblings suffered GBS infections - it can usually be managed so it doesn't affect a baby, particularly when they know about it beforehand. I'm sure you'll find others on here who will confirm that too!

thank you for your comment, my daughter has suffered for a second time now with group b strep its such an awful infection, the fact that i should have been swabbed at my local hospital and wasn't and the treatment me and my daughter received from the hospital makes me worry that twice now iv had to trust them with my daughters life i just cant imagine having to go through this again, i just really hope we are out of the woods now and she doesn't get it again! i really do find this website helpful and hearing other parents stories helps you deal with your own emotions of your ordeal!

Woodd, I'm so sorry to hear what happened. How awful that your notes hadn't been updated with the fact GBS had been found 2 weeks earlier and so you weren't given antibiotics in labour. And I'm SO cross that the doctor told you that you had given it to her - gracious me, how insensitive can you get! Yes, she will have picked up the GBS from you, but that's not the same as giving it to her - many many babies exposed to GBS shrug it off without a problem, but sadly some don't.

If you haven't already, please do contact the hospital and ask what the progress of the investigation is, reminding them of the key facts. If you write to your or Amina's consultant, then copy it in to the Chief Executive of the Trust and to the Medical Director of the Trust (if you don't know their names, don't worry - using their job titles will be enough for the letter to get to them).

As you say, the most important thing is having your healthy little girl home with you - wonderful!
