I am sorry that you are feeling like this. I found out that i am hyper vigilant as part of my FND - if someone comes into a room and surprises me or sudden sounds, trigger a complete reaction - anything that startles me!
My legs go, I might swear/ shout out and my heart goes crazy. I have had this right from the beginning following the bang to my head.
My family and i joke about it now - it happened the other day when my sister dropped something!
But FND is different for all of us when it comes to the less obvious symptoms. I am about to undergo a type of psychological therapy called EMDR which is also used for Complex PTSD.
Maybe phone the help line as like you, I had no idea what was going on, I started smoking (now replaced by sucking sweets) and was incapable of much at all... FND Hope has a good website.
Good luck and take care of yourself, things will hopefully settle in time
Yes, this is one theory. I was diagnosed with FND by a neurologist and CPTSD by a neuro-psychiatrist. They occur together sometimes. Anything you can do to calm down your nervous system will help. I've stopped drinking caffeine and try to get as much sleep as possible (although I can't manage more than 6 hours right now). I've stopped watching/reading my favourite murder mysteries and just watch comedies and baking shows! Being in nature helps me too. It's a bit trial and error but eventually you figure out what works. Take care.
Hi van i'm new to this condition how ever i'm sleeping most of the day away atm but when i am up i'm constantly on nervous mode cant seem to stop it another issues i'm finding is taking meds 1 paracetamol & my head goes a bit funny like ive been sedated or going to fit im not sure if this is normal so worried that I'm going to be suffering cause i cant take any pain relief & just need to sort out why i'm so nervous i've had my friend call around & it didnt even feel like i was in the same room as her found it hard to just sit & chat as normal starting to bug me not beable to do much pretty much bed bound & feeling more isolated than eva 😭😭
Hi I can relate to your issues, I am on my 13th year of FND and have done all the medical treatments available. That said, it could be something else like a Thyroid Condition but these can sometimes take years to pin down to a diagnosis, you would need many repeat blood tests to confirm either way. Mind you, there is no rule that says you can only have Thyroid OR FND, it is possible to have both!
It sounds to me very much like you have got out of your natural rhythm. Take a breath, there are over 400 people a year diagnosed with FND and we all have different versions of FND symptoms.
Best advice is to try and maintain your activity at a comfortable medium level, no overdoing it or underdoing it. Set an alarm to wake you up in the morning and go to bed at the same time each night to help restore your sleep/wake cycle this can really mess up your hormones otherwise. Eat at regular times and make sure you hydrate adequately. Lower intake of any fizzy drinks or caffeine you might be drinking, these keep the Adrenaline levels high and high Adrenaline = Fight or Flight mode staying active longer.
Try to keep your Adrenaline at a workable level and the body will realise there is no panic and calm your body down. Hormones and other chemical biosystems change levels throughout the day, every day; by activity, environment, emotions and yes, even different foods. Setting a medium level routine helps your body to learn and accept you are not needing the Flight, Freeze, Fight mode permanently switched on.
Know also that the medical professionals believe you can retrain your brain to overcome the unpleasant or life crisis symptoms of FND, but a lot of your body will be doing these unwelcomed symptoms subconsciously and automatically.
That is why repeated good routine helps, especially long term because you can find calm, some activity that relaxes your brain. Even different ways to not over think situations eventually and to a level you are comfortable maintaining - just takes massive amount of practice and thinking around the stressful problems.
Be kind to yourself and look for the calm in the storm.
Just finding my life so hard jerking in my sleep over heating aching muscles spasms my legs constantly shake when i'm stood up fatigue headache brain neva in gear & i have no happy hormone in me with leads me to sit up & cry & i cant even take half a paracetamol without feeling I'm fitting off it... got this compulsive thing where have to twirl my hair pick my lip & smoke feel a right mess just wish i had one happy hormone to keep me going but instead living in this shitty nightmare my partner is feeling its to much to handle with me & tbh i cant do this alone now!..many people r suffer i ano that but just for one day i'd like to wake up feeling a bit normal
Hello my sweetheart,So sorry to hear how poorly you feel,
you need to contact your GP asap and get prescribed something to calm you, if only in the short term, nobody can go on like this. then you need to get strong and tell you GP that you think you have FND and am not leaving until you get meds and referals for it.
compulsions are similar to mine where I have to rub my legs and palms and smoke too.
Doc should prescribe you some meds where you can at least relax or sleep, but you must keep asking. wishing you much luckxx
Hi right, so you need some Antidepressants urgently!I know what you are thinking, but I was persuaded to try some for a short period and they did really help for awhile (there are several types and you need to find the one that suits you in the dose that suits you, for me Mitazipine really worked- although did get some weight gain). Antidepressant tablets equal out the chemicals in your brain and so can calm down both anxiety or depression, thus improving sleep a bit. And many pills can be dissolvable or liquid form if that is an additional worry.
Did I read also you are going through menopause? Because this can be a nightmare for many women especially at night (there was a great TV Documentary about it couple years ago with a Newsreader, sadly I cannot remember her name?) But Menopause can easily heighten anxiety/OCD, fatigue and muscle issues - speak to your GP even over the phone, they can definitely help with these symptoms as well.

Thanks i did have some pills that i felt sedated off & felt like i was fitting off them like my brain couldnt handle them to well really have been struggling with my brain feels num & it feels like I'm getting mega headaches sleeping loads atm & thats another issue really cant balance my day out as the two thing defines one another like sleeping & then trying to do something when my brain just gets funny & cuts off like there no sense coming from it drs said its something to do with the Neurotransmitters i have very little info on whats going on just trying to cope a bare with it i dont have a happy hormone anywhere to think positive neither!.really wanted him to do blood test but he refused dont think he knows how much this is effecting me feel disabled with it cut off from everything in life
As you feel your body is not responding well to any medication, perhaps you can tap into and reset the natural bio-wavelengths through Breathing and/or Meditation exercises.
I know all a bit flimsy and unconventional advice right? But I was told by medical professionals that these techniques can really make a difference to both mind and body if practised for even a short period daily. There must be something in it, as it has worked for religious orders for centuries!
There are loads of types of Breathing and Meditation exercises available on the Internet and a lot are free to download either on paper or audio. I have a 10 minute guided muscle relaxation audio version on my mobile for example.
And I have used the focus on Breathing exercises in panicky situations, where you simply sit listen/feel yourself breathing In and Out and just try to keep a regular slow-ish pace, especially if you feel your are breathing too fast.
I have tried the 5 things in a place distraction meditation - so in the place where you are;
Look for 5 different Things i.e pictures, ornaments, door handles, lights
Look for 5 different Colours i.e wall paint, clothes, books
Look for 5 different Textures i.e carpet, grass, lino, tiles, wood, metal, china
Listen for 5 different Sounds i.e traffic noise, birds chirping, talking, music, washer
Sense 5 different Smells i.e detergent, flower scent, coffee, purfume
Just going into a `happy Place' in your mind, where you imagine yourself in that past place or event where you have been truly happy - can help your brain relax a little if practised regularly.
What have you got to lose by giving it a go?

Thanks brokendeer i'l give them another go the mental health team told me about some breathing pointers but it neva seemed to relax me because the compulsive disorder that comes with the condition just takes over then i end up back a square one at the mo i'm in denial wake up still thinking i can do those things i use to do until my arms start not wanting to work or my full body is weak & tired then i get to point of not knowing wot to do with myself vicious cycle just wish i could come to terms with it or maybe give myself a break, brokendeer can i ask if you have fnd as i've only come across one other person on here with it ?xx
Have been practicing yoga and thi chi for many years , however I now do chair exercises. And attend meditation classes on Zoom, they do help me to relax, but do not ease the symptoms and neuropathy in hands and feet. You have to find a way to unwind but it is difficult, as the symptoms vary from patient to patient.I feel they are better than going down the mental health route, and medication.
