Anti NMDA receptor encephalitis

Hi all

I was given the diagnosis of 'conversion disorder/ FND' a few years ago when I had seizures, movement disorder, gait disturbance, balance issues etc. I was given the diagnosis after being admitted to A&E. Doctors took one look at my history of mental health issues, and made assumptions.

I've now tested positive for Anti NMDA receptor anitbodes- which is a form of brain infection that causes seizures, movement disorders. It usually accompanies symptoms like psychosis and other psychiatric symptoms.

In my case doctors were way too quick to put this diagnosis on me, when I was actually very ill. And having 'conversion disorder/ FND' on my records made it impossible to get a second opinion and caused prejudice against me in the medical system. Most doctors were suspicious of me when I kept telling them I was ill.

Please look into this condition- it's not uncommon for it to be initially misdiagnosed.

And also, just because someone has a history of trauma or mental health issues, does NOT mean you can't have a neurological condition too.

I watched a TV program on this recently (I'm in Australia) and to me it literally screamed FND. Brain On Fire: My Month of Madness by Susannah Calahan is an auto biography on this condition and perhaps worth a look. Enter into search engine and both this and the movie based on the book came up.

A lot of people are talking about this. I was approached by a younger girl than myself on her early 20's and she advised me to watch it. I must do so now. Thanks for bringing that up although I heard the outcome was another condition?!

Thanks for this info. May I ask how long was the time between the beginning of your symptoms to your diagnosis of encephalitis?
