CBO Report: Medicare Part D pays three times more than Medicaid for prescription drugs - and other anomalies in prescription drug costs

These two recent CBO reports (2 x thanks to Senator Sanders) reveal the inequity is the prices paid for Medicare prescription drugs. I remember when the Part D (prescription drug benefit) legislation was passed hearing a commentator say that eventually the cost for Part D would exceed that of the rest of Medicare. That was in 2003 . . . Well, are we are there yet?

BTW, That bill was labeled as "H.R.1 - Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003". (emphasis added.)

And, BTW, the next time you hear someone on a forum suggesting you take an new unproven oral version for a PCa drug as an alternative to a proven injectable, think 2 or maybe 3 times before you consider switching - because, if you are on Medicare and have Part D coverage, you will be paying for that drug under Part D rather than Part B; i.e., very deep pockets will be required to pay out of pocket for the new (unproven over the long term) version of a drug that is fully covered under Part B.

Profits before patients is the standard operating procedure for Big Pharma. Caveat Emptor is required for all patients.

I saw it coming when the new generation of meds for CLL came online. All were oral meds with the retail cost for a year of treatment of about $ 150 K. Common reference (not all bad) is that the current drugs (all oral) have turned an incurable disease into a chronic one, similar to what happened with AIDS. From the point of view of pharma, that is the holly grail income stream ~ just like with whole-life insurance policies that were popular when I was just out of college, recurring revenues year after year as far as the eye can see. I don't expect we will ever see a new infusion drug reach the market from here on out.

This sort of tells the whole story:

K9 Detective,

Thanks for reporting... bilking the elderly out of their money for much needed meds.... the government doesn't want us ordering from Canada or India either.... the price of drugs in India is 1/10th or less than drugs here... shameful.... In the meantime, stay warm and be well....another snowy day in WV....
