You will need the support of your GP to help you cope with your new diagnosis. If you feel that your current GP is not being helpful I think you should strongly consider finding a new one. Some doctors would like to blame everything on our weight but clearly they have to look beyond this to see someone who is in pain and needs help without judgement. Goood luck and let us know how you get on. Jane x

Ummm I am just over 5foot and was eight stone when diagnosed.... Go see another gp....

You need support not told to lose weight

Hello Stickleberry, I am so sorry you are having a hard time of it at the moment, it's still early days and difficult at this stage to come to terms with having Fibromyalgia. Don't be too hard on yourself, it's quite a shock being diagnosed and understanding the condition/s,

Did your GP diagnose you I wonder? The reason I say this is because if you don't feel you are getting the correct level of support and understanding, perhaps it's time to get a second opinion regarding treatment etc. It is possible to change your GP. Perhaps ask for a referral to a Rheumatologist, I personally found this to be most helpful to me - I was prescribed meds that really helped me and felt understood and supported too.

You should not be being pulled up about your weight at this point. Asking you if you think your Fibro is because of this is dreadful and completely wrong in my opinion. Here's a hug for you from me ((( hug )))

Please let us know how you get on, take care.

you need a gp for supprt love i have only recently been diagnosed and my gp is brill go to another doctor and they do say weight gain is due to fibro

in reply to jackie1

Weight gain is mainly due to side effects from some medications and lack of activity. With Fibromyalgia we don't tend to be as active as we were before, some of us have had to stop working and as a result spend large periods at home relatively inactive compared to before. This invariably results in weight gain.

my son was diagnosed with fibro not many months ago. probably about same time as you. and he is far from being overweight. never been overweight in his life, more inclined to be the other way at times in fact., find a different doc that believes that fibro is a medical condition and understands what it is and how it can affect ppl.

Find a new doctor, I am always highly suspicious of the ones who blame everything on things like weight, being a young mum, working full time etc etc. Just excuses for not doing their job.

Try other doctors in the practice or else look for a new practice.

I've just had a really upsetting experience today and am gearing myself to complain to the practice manager....

I went today re my recent Urticaria and the fact I I thought it could be a reaction to a drug I'm using...Doc was one I haven't seen before so had only a brief flitting glance at some history. I walked out on her as she well 'well all I see is a fat unhappy lady sat in front of me'!!! Now yes I am overweight however I am usually of a happy nature however with all the crap I had had of late who wouldn't be unhappy:( I am still in shock that she didn't seem in the slightest bit interested in why i went there today, I am acutally sick of being at the doctors, I have a grandchild I rarely see as I often sit for over an hour for a same day appointment and I would much rather be with my grandchild that be in a waiting room with many other catching ailments.

I know that weight is an issue with heath however some Docs see it as the be all and end all and as a non smoker or drinker I feel I can't be all bad. Most of the GP's at my surgery are great...such a shame I got a same day app with a very uncaring Doc...Will be asking to see another in future x Go see a different doc at your surgery as I am sure there is someone there to help youx

i recently saw a differetn GP to my own all i got was "its all in your mind" considering never seen me before and doesnt know me its out of order and totally unprofessional.i walked out and sia d " thanks fro nothing.ive havent spent 2 hour sof my day coming here for you to say that."complained to practice manager who just said "wellwhat do you want me to do"

in reply to

Went straight after work and had a face to face with the practice manager...I have to now put all in writing however she was very good and seeing another GP at 9am tomorrow...one that has known me and family for around 15 years

I had a terrible experience with my GP, she said there was nothing wrong with me, its all in my head, it is just 'normal' pain which everyone gets at some stage in their life, just deal with it, get back to work and get on with it!!! I have now found a fantastic doctor, who diagnosed me was very supportive and is actually trying to help me cope with my symptoms instead of telling me it is all in my head.

I put up with my GP not believing me for nearly 12 months, and just wish I would have moved the second she showed she was going to be unsupportive. Do not think just coz they are a doctor they know everything, change doctors until you feel happy you are being taken seriously and they are listening to you. I ended up suffering even more as I felt I couldn't go in and talk to my doc as she made me feel like a liar who was begging for drugs, so I would suffer as I ended up crying and being even more depressed every time I went in to see her, so just didn't go in. Now I have been to see what I consider a 'real' doctor I am so angry at myself for not changing sooner as I feel I can go and talk to him about anything and he has got me on new meds to see if it helps and booked me in to see him again in a few weeks to see how I am getting on, and i just feels like he is taking me seriously and really is just an amazing doctor. Please don't make the same mistake I did you don't have to put up with doctors making you feel like you are not important. You are the one that has to live with it, no one knows your symptoms better than you. If they won't listen to you keep changing till you find someone that will listen, I know it is a pain to keep having to explain it all to a new doctor but honestly if you find a good doctor it is more than worth it in the end.

what a horrible gp dont let them upset you lv you have enough to contend with without that change your gp fibro has nothing to do with your weight i was diagnosed four and a half years ago since then ive lost 36lbs and my fibro has got worse so what does that tell you hope you get sorted lv gentle hugs xxx

in reply to shaz66

The practice manager is pretty rounded too and she was in shock at the Dr's comments...wouldn't have minded if I was asking for a tummy tuck or something else wieght related.....well done on your weight loss:)

The pharmacy lady told me no matter what she goes to her doctor about he alway mentions how much does she drink...I don't drink or smoke however am overweight though I only have a colestrol level of 3 so I must be doing something right at least. x

sounds like to find a new GP. do you know of a local fibro support group that you can speak to in order to find a GP that is good with Fibro!

Good luck, there are good GPs out there, you just need to find them

best wishes
