Hello, yes I've recently had 2 tattoos in the last year I can confirm it is uncomfortable but I managed it OK and focused on the outcome more than the heightened pain, totally worth it in the end.

Hi 👋 firstly what you thinking about getting?? I've got a few and recently got one from my shoulder to my wrist. I'm gonna be honest, it really depends on the amount of shading you are getting for example if its a line work tattoo I would say it's more a niggle than sore as its done quickly. If its a tattoo with alot of shading its more painful because its prolonged. Also there are parts of your body that are more painful areas than others you can look at a chart online with info. There's also the option of using numbing cream. I've never needed it. I haven't found any I have had done an unbearable pain. You will manage, its always way worse in your head than in reality.... go for it!! 😁

Hi,i have a number of tattoos,i would say it depends where on your body and the size of it. Be prepared though they can be rather addictive.

Hi, I have had two tattoos since being diagnosed and was fine with them both. You can get numbing cream which may also help. Good luck

I agree, not to mention that if you get something fashionable, it may become embarrassing in a few years!

Cheers, Midori

I agree with Elle247 shading is the uncomfortable part. I have 7 tattoos on various parts of my body and none have been painful. Go for it.

Very interesting thread. My daughter in law is a tattoo artist and has offered a free tattoo of my choice. So far I have not accepted this gift because I am worried about increasing inflammation in my body and having a flare as mentioned by Princessfoo. Mostly mentioned here are pain issues, so I want to make the assumption that the majority did not have any consequences like increase of symptoms (?). That would be encouraging.

Yes I had one last year after putting it off for many many many years and ya know what I wish did had it done years ago. If I can stand pain of all my ailments I can stand the pain of a tattoo and I had it done on my ankle. It was really not a big deal just when they put white on it hurt little bit more. I'm having more when I know what I want and where I want it xI'd say go for it everytime

Hi, ai have a few tattoos. Two on my forearms a cover up recently done on my back and for those three I found wasn’t painful and I actually fell asleep. My last one done recently on my upper leg was hard going. I was in pain going so my pain threshold wasn’t good that day. My tattooist is a friend of mine and she understands my condition so we did have regular breaks and I found it painful. Good luck with yours, explain to your tattooist that you may need regular breaks xx

Hi Karen 👋

I too have Fibromyalgia, and I currently have 10 tattoos on various parts of my body. Compared to what we go through daily with Fibro, a tattoo is a walk in the park. As other's have said, it all depends on what you get and where, as to the level of pain you'll experience. Starting small and placing it somewhere that the majority of people say is less painful might be good idea just to give you a taster as to how it'll be.

I have only personally had trouble with one tattoo so far and that was on my thigh, as the muscle kept jumping, the tattooist was trying her hardest to keep the lines straight, but the more I attempted to stop the twitching and the more conscious I was about it, the worse it was. My legs suffer the most with my Fibro so I don't know if there is any correlation there or not, but I have made the decision not to have any further tattoos on my legs for my own sake as well as the artist 😂 That poor woman must have felt like she was tattooing on a trampoline that day.

In summary, I haven't had much trouble pain wise. It feels more irritating than painful to me personally, like a repeated cat scratch. Be open and honest with your tattoo artist and I'm sure they would be happy to try and accommodate any needs you may have.

Good luck

Gemima ❤️

Hi Karenwelshx,

I have a few, A huge unicorn being stroked by a fairy that covers my back,I have a large one coming over my shoulder,a dragon fly at full flight and I also have a sleeve on my left arm some large flowers with 20 dragonflies The dragonflies are people in my life, I have a black one on my wrist that is me, like a black sheep of the family, They are all still beautiful colours even after over 10 years,

Anything that pierces the skin will hurt I have always had a high level to pain, ( I had my four children with no pain meds ) The trick I used was to get myself into a calm, relaxed state and NEVER watch!!

This is how I knew something was wrong, I was having a flower touched up and I kept saying ow and flinched, Not a good idea when you are having a tattoo, I tried once more and nearly fainted, I had a cold compress on the back of my neck,

To say I really hurt was an under estimate, I got home and couldn't get out of my bed, I crawled to the toilet for four days and only had milk and toast, My Hubby took care of me to this day, Sometimes a simple kiss goodnight would make me flinch,

We haven't had a snog for years (Hahaha).

On a serious note, Go and do your research, Speak with them and ask for a very small something, your initial or baby flower ect

I bid you good luck with your art piece, I now know I won't be having any more 😪 My personal belief is never ever have a person's name,Would you like to be reminded of a past relationship.

Take care Debs
