Hello fybro friends, does anyone suffer from electric shocks in the body at night? Doctor just looks at me blankly when told but it is scary

Hi, yes I get this, but through the day, when I touch a tap, or fridge, it doesn’t scare me, more annoying , as it makes me jump, then set off some pain elsewhere.It’s just static, so don’t be scared.

Not much info to go on, so here are a few questions. Does it hurt or is it just surprising? Does is it in one spot at a time? Does it travel? Is it the same every night? Is it always the same place? What makes it an electric shock as opposed to a shooting pain? Does it occur just as you are dropping off to sleep?

Hi, it is not static electricity, it wakes me up the pain is so bad, it runs down my arms and into my hands, it runs down my back and down my legs, it’s always different, not in the same place sometimes just the leg, or arm, or back. It feels like I’ve touched a mains electric cable (if you’ve ever done that? ) I have and it is excruciating pain. It is not the same every night, sometimes I go weeks without. I can’t work out any cause or reason that it happens but it is worse when my Fybro flares, and when I get cold sores. Thank you for reading 🙏

There are conditions that cause this but I can’t suggest diagnoses. The nature of what you describe sounds neurological so it might worth asking your doctor for a neurologist’s opinion. Just shrugging shoulders is not really good enough. I agree, static is a one off ouchy when you touch something.

I have the same - they are more like twitches that raise my arm or leg or body - mostly at night . Can you us know what your GP says please . I also have the most awful tinnitus and fatigue is awful - on top of the pains

This happened to me coming off antidepressants for weeks but it wasn't just at night, randomly would feel like a pulse of electricty was snapping through me. The doctor told me it was a side effect of coming off certain ones you've been on for awhile. But he said if it didn't get better to make another appointment because other things can cause it too so might be worthwhile speaking with your doctor again.

I used to get those trying to get to sleep I have Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy, only when I was on lamictal, what sort of medication are you on?

Hi, It’s common to experience “body jolts” in connection with certain types of medications. You should discuss this symptom with your doctor or pharmacist if you think it is being caused by the medication you are taking.

I believe when coming off certain medications it can also cause these kind of body shocks.

Do you mean Exploding head syndrome , Episodic cranial sensory shock ? This is scary and my Dr did not seem to know anything about it. Feels like an electric shock and a big bang / jerk can be felt.

Brain shocks, when a person is trying to sleep, the exact moment between consciousness and unconsciouness in the process of sleep, like an electric shock!

Hi Goldylocks, sorry for late reply, I pick up from my email. What you’re describing sounds exactly like the shocks I’m experiencing. Mine are triggered by position and yes they’re extreme agony. I’ve just been told by a neuro muscle conditions specialist 2 weeks ago that they’re coming from my very heightened sensitised central nervous system. He believes cns sensitisation can be dumbed down, that the mind can control the brain with a lot of work through specialist cbt therapy. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this yet though I plan to find a specialist medical psychologist to find out more. Thought it worth mentioning. Maybe yours is worth discussing with a neuro too? Thank you for responding 🙏 this seems to make sense, I’m now thinking maybe hypnosis as a way forward. Was due to see a doctor on Monday but now have covid so just telephone conversation but will ask to see neuro.🙏

Good luck then Goldy. I had considered hypnotherapy a couple of years back but the therapist I talked to said she believed my nervous system was too heightened to tolerate someone ‘walking around’ in my head. In my case with the severity of rigidity I deal with now I’m thinking she was on the mark with that one! Anyway if you can I think hypnotherapy sounds a great thing to try. Fingers crossed it all works out very well for you. Bm

Hi Goldylocks, I get them in the shoulders. They are sharp and sudden. Sometimes they make me jump and whelp. I dad never given them a names.

Hi there, Yes this is one of my predominant symptoms. It feels like it's linked to fight or flight response but not exclusively to. It's different from the feeling from static electricity as this is generated within. Often starts mid chest and radiates out and through shoulders and limbs. Occasionally appears as random stabbing at any point in the body. I'm not on meds so I know that isn't the cause. Associated feelings are travelling 'electrical' sensations, fizzy feeling in my arms and hands, random pinging, stabbing anywhere including scalp and temple it feels like my body has short circuited.What a strange condition this is!

Love to all you fellow fibro folk. I hope we find the answers. I wonder how the the knowledge that it's 'autoummune' will change treatment?

I have suffered from adhesive Arachnoiditis for 28 years and i use a 8 inch piece of copper tube and roll it on my lumbar for about 5 seconds then put my magnet on my lumbar and slide it back and forth and pull it off. The magnet pulls the electricity from my spine out, i also do it between my shoulder blades and it helps so much. We all have electric signals being sent from out brain down our spinal cord and it helps to pull the excess out. Hope this helps if you try it. It sure does work for me and a lot of others that suffer from electric shock. I just happened to have a great doctor that does s lot of those kind of things and really has improved my life. Hope you try it, copper really doesn't matter that much on size or length,, but try at least 3 inches or longer, don't want to be to small so like 1/2 inch round minimum and at least 3 inch long roll it where the shocking is for 5 seconds or so, the magnet needs to be a strong one, not that big just strong, when your done with the copper just put magnet on and slide it back and forth then pull it off slowly. You don't want to leave it on long or it will make more electricity in that area. Wish you well
