I don’t know much about this, but I just looked it up, and it states if you was getting it before your husband received his pension, then just deductions will be taken from your esa, but in another part I read his may be stopped!, I hope some one else knows more, sorry I couldn’t help more.

No, I agree, it’s not clear, it all seems to contradict. Hidden , I have tagged ajay, who may be able to help if he is well enough, he is more clued up on benefits. Thank you ajay, hope you are okish.

Hi I’m claiming ESA and have a private pension They do take this into account when calculating your ESA. I was told if I receive £85 or over per week from my pension my ESA amount will be affected.

When you start getting your state pension the ESA will stop and you will have to claim UC if you need to to continue claiming other benefits.

That’s good to know in preparation for receiving my state pension. Thank you 😊

The CAB universal credit help line where most helpful and the whole process was easy and stress free.

Hi I'm on income related ESA cos my husband gets state pension and his private pension it means you basically get no help with nhs costs and your council tax etc. Hope this helps sorry

I would phone the DWP to ask them. I had an NHS pension and they deducted this off my ESA when I was receiving it. I have been receiving my state pension now 2 years plus my NHS one. If the ESA is for both of you then you can ring them they should tell you if you can continue to get this for yourself good luck

Hello I was in the same situation as your selves. I was claiming ESA support group for 4 years receiving housing benefits as my state retirement date was fast approaching I knew my ESA would stop and having stopped I would lose my housing benefits as well as they where linked to the ESA. A few months before my new retirement my wife was told by the council to claim UC as once my state pension begins the housing benefits will stop. So on contacting the DWP reference ESA and UC I was informed that once a claim for UC was made the ESA would stop having 2 more monthly payments due impaired till my last payment had been made , then I contacted the CAB universal credit advice line and spent a good hour giving my details so a claim forecast could be worked out. That was Monday I retired on the Friday so applied for UC on Tuesday had an over the phone interview on Thursday my wife had hers on the next Monday she was also claiming Carer’s allowance for looking after me. We got UC including the £20 uplift after deductions of over £1100 we get £370 UC no housing benefit but Council tax full relief. I hope by reading this others will prepare for their state retirement payments upsetting other benefits. I had to agree to spent 35 hours a week looking for work, except the minimum wage and be willing to,travel1.5. Hours to work. It was so funny as I retired the next day but the interviewer said you have to agree in my online UC journal for my claim to proceed. Crazy but that’s the way things are done.
