I can't speak to palpitations *exactly* but chest/rib/sternum pain is called Costochondritis. It's caused by inflammation of the cartilage. (Sounds familiar, right?) You might interpret it like palpitations depending on the situation, or, it might give you anxiety resulting in palpitations, or, if you also get GERD, the two together would FEEL like heart palpitations when they were not. (GERD often goes along with the others.)
I've had it since i was a teen and thought this entire time it was because my bra neverfit right and I slouched, so figured my torso would sometimes get so irritated I would feel like I was in paid I wasn't in. ... But about a year or so ago I went to go see my regular doctor (who I trust/ed implicitly; she is now living in another country) with a flu that wouldn't leave and she told me the chest pain I described (the same rib pain I realized I'd had on and off since a teen) was Costochondritis. And I had no idea that was even a thing!
Really helpful thanks I’m back at GP couple of weeks and was thinking of discussing fibromyalgia as I have many tender points but the chest tightness just had me worried
Be carful though I was miss diagnosed with costocondrtis for a long time and treated with lots of pain killer the underlying infection was missed and I ended up with a serious long stay in hospital nearly all my pain is chest pain some caused by anxiety of becoming so ill again and not being helped properly I now have blood test regularly to check for infection when the pain flairs up
As already suggested, cosochondritis is a likely culprit (obviously all other causes of chest pain should be investigated first). In fact I'd say it's one of the worse elements of my fibro as unlike the other symptoms which flare up and subside, the gnawing pain in my sternum is present 24/7. It even audibly clicks and pops in the same way most of my other joints do. Naproxen is the only thing that eases it (also occasionally kratom), as other painkillers don't really help as well with inflammation so if you can get a Dr to agree that it's 'costo', ask for a naproxen prescription. I've heard cortisone injections can help there too. It's a horrible symptom of any chronic pain disorder but it does ease the anxiety a little when you know it's a musculoskeletal symptom... Wishing you the best x
Hi, I also have CFS, I have constant chest pain, palpitations, and panic attacks, all my investigations are normal even though sometimes I feel like I might be having a heart attack!!!! I usually lay on the sofa and put classic FM on and do some slow deep breathing, I take Citalipram 20 mgs which help with anxiety but it's really a case of learning your bodies reaction to situations and treating yourself with care and love. I have had this for over 20 yrs but I really hope you get some relief. Try Dr Charles Shepherds books on ME. He is amazing , xx
Id say keep pushing and going back to the doctor on this one , i had 4 years of chest pain along side the fybromaralga and it kept getting dismissed , well both kept getting dismissed as a pulled muscle, anxiety , overdoing it, depression " do you want anti depressant?" I also had a few ecg's nothing showed up , i even had one consultant in hosptial tell me i was waisting their time ! But after a bad bout i went back and one doctor decided to send me to a chest clinic and i thought i was going to see another doctor and get some answers , who i saw was a nurse who talked and assesed my symptoms and decided to send me for a CT scan , which showed i had two blocked arteries which were causing angina ...long story short bag of pills and the chest pains are under control 😊 down side it took another 18months for the doctor to diagnose FB and to try and help with it but i cant take anything for the pain other than paracetamol becasuse of the heart condition ...but at least i know which is which and can stop worrying whats happening to me which cause anxiety, which in turn causes chest pain, vicious circle .
Try not to worry , go back to doc even see a different one antil you get answers, if it is anxiety then nhs also offer a free support service which you can self refer and get some help , hope this helps and you have a good weekend x
Yeah, I get palps, chest pain but I have severe anxiety/depression (agoraphobia and maybe social anxiety).
I've also read that Costochondritis is something that we can get which I'm wondering if I have because my ribs are sore and it feels like something is poking in them, mainly on the left.
Oh! That's exactly the feeling I get in my ribs - like something's poking me in them and like you it's largely on the left. I'd never heard of costochondritis before joining this forum and now I'm wondering if that's what it is too.
I too have costrocondrites and its very painful mine has been caused by Breast Cancer and Radiotherapy and exuberant by Fibromylagia AWFUL!!
It can be as painful like a heart attack and I was recently made to rushed to hospital with it in late November.
I use an infared to Lamp for the pain and inflammation but it's still not gone yet as we have to breathe frustrating and the consultant at the hospital said it could take between 2 weeks to 2 years to go
