Dachshunds are active, loyal little dogs that make great companions. They are happier in pairs than living alone. The main thing for those of us with fibro is that for all dogs to remain healthy they must be walked every day, so if you can't walk yourself you need a friend or a dog walker who can walk the dog for you. Dog walkers cost from £5 to £10 per walk. Bear in mind also that a quarter of all Dachshunds suffer with back problems, so you need to be able to afford either pet insurance or expensive vet bills. A friend of mine paid over £800 recently for an MRI and other tests on her dog's back. It costs me £72 for my dog with kidney problems just to have her three monthly blood test and her special renal food costs £54 a month. The food is not covered by insurance. Looking after a dog or a cat properly isn't cheap, but if you're ok with the financial side then you'll never find a better friend.

If you do get a dog(s), please adopt a rescue.

Nevsr had a pure bred one but my first dog was a dachund/terrier cross like a dachund on long legs and she was a fabulous dog. Fortunately she had a bark not a yap. As they have very short hair unless of course you go for the wired haired ones they make fabulous hot water bottles and love to get in your bed.

The pure bred ones I have known even though they are small still like their walks but every one I know as not keen to go out in the rain for some reason. You will have to be strict if you love your garden as their terrier instincts sometimes leads to them digging holes perhaps where you don't want them as my relatives found out. They can be proper clowns my sister in law's loved their little squeaky toys.Have you read up on them as their are websites that are just about them.

Are you thinking of a boy or a girl? They are really cute as puppies like fat sausages on legs. Do hope you enjoy if you decide to have one.

We keep on thinking about having another dog but I did all the training amd the majority of the walking and feeding last time and we had a big garden with fields and canal paths and a big park nearby. Now I know I could only do short walks and I keep on wondering whether my OH would keep his side of the bargain as it would need to be walked regularly as our garden is only a pocket hankerchief size.

We keep on wondering about fostering for a local rescue charity whilst they find permanent as we have looked after other people's dogs but if course that has been short term.

Let us know what you decide. If it is a yes of course we will expect a picture.🐶🐩🐕

I have never had anything like that myself but I think they are such adorable little dogs. I genuinely hope that if you decide to get one that you both love each other without reservation my friend x :)

I would be so jealous, but very pleased for you. Always been a dog lover but not allowed one here due to rules. Had a wonderful funny little companion who had ne in tears of laughter that washed away the tears of pain, he was my crazy little parrot Ollie, unfortunately i could no longer look after him so he went back to the breeder who hatched him for me. 2 years later i am still heart broken every day. Go grab your little sausage if you feel you are the right person for him/her, very best wishes.

All the hounds I have met have been yappers. I fleeting considered having one once. But decided against it because of barking.

Hope you find your 4legged friend no experience of daschund's all dogs are wonderful if they are treat with respect

They are lovely dogs, but prone to back problems, slipped discs in particular. A friend has a rescue chihuahua, she is lovely, but very timid due to having been used for breeding, by an unscrupulous dog breeder. This has meant she is so nervous of other dogs and people. I'm not certain how they would be if bought as a puppy. I believe the puppies are expensive £800 plus.

They often have severe back problems, due to the length of the back, which can result in paralysis. also sometimes they have problems with their front legs as sometimes the bones grow at different rates, resulting in badly aligned joints, great pain and arthritis. Apart from that they can be sweet little dogs. Vets bills can be horrendous.

Hi , Have you ever thought of getting a rescue dog, you may even be able to get a sausage dog from a rescue place , ( you could try a Dachshunds Rescue site to see if they have one) because the do certain breed rescues ! It always seem such a shame that people breed more dogs out there when there are such a lot of animals (dogs) that are looking for a good home already ! Please think about it ! We had a Rescue dog for over 15 years ( the one on the left ) she made us very happy , but sadly lost her 3 years ago & miss her very very much! her name was Molly .

Hi, my daughter has a chihuahua, I look after a lot when she is at work, I did not intend to but she is so lovely I realy like having her. She does not like going for walks, she's happy running round the garden, I do take her as I walk a lot when I can, but she hides when she sees the lead.

I have had a few dogs, she is the most loving dog, she always sits with me, doesn't hardly ever bark, I often think if I get where I can't go out I would like one for myself. She is such good company and when I have her I don't feel anywhere nr as lonely as I do sometimes.

I had one and they are lovely dogs the amount of times I didn't have her lead with me when out for her walks was no body's business sort of thing but she was always next to me so didn't need one x
