Hi. I have just found this site, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 2 years ago but never referred to a consultant. Should I insist on one.
A specialist can help and you need to be sure you have not got something else. My specialist gave me an injection and physical therapy both of which helped. A GP is just that general person who sends you in the direction. Ask again.
Hi Trisha222
Welcome to our friendly, caring and sharing fibro forum and I hope you find us informative and helpful. A lot of members can associate with being told similar things by their GP's and have since been referred to the proper consultants. There is a Tender Point Test (TPT) that a rheumatologist can do to assess you for Fibromyalgia which is discussed in our FAQ about how it is diagnosed. I have included the link for that for you and hope it can help you when you go to see your doctor next. It is good to be as informed as you can as it shows you know things about your condition and are taking it seriously.
Have you visited our Mother site fibroaction.org ?
There is a wealth of information regarding fibromyalgia and all things associated even a section discussing how you can deal with doctors, which may be useful for you. The following link will take you there and is taken from the section Learn More About Fibro: Becoming An Expert Patient

I personally found that getting clarification from a consultant made it more real, easier to believe somehow but nothing against my GP he is fantastic with me More to do with other's believed me more and acepted more because the diagnosis came from a consultant, in my world apparently if there's no consultant then people don't seem to believe me!! I'm sure that there'll be others who have or do feel the same way too
I also personally think it throws a bit more weight to benefit claims too if you have a consultants diagnosis, I am not saying that it does beause I don't personally have evidence to prove it but I feel it helps.
I hope the links and info are useful for you Trisha222 and wish you wellness and hope that you get to see a consultant soon, you could request to see a Rheumatologist for TPT
Don't be afraid to ask any further questions, have a moan, rant or to join in with fun and giggles to distract your mind for a little while
Fluffie hugs and smiles looking forward to seeing you around there's always someone listening

Hi Trisha222
I sincerely hope that you are feeling well today? Welcome to the forum, and I genuinely hope that you find it as useful as I do? I see that our zeb73 has given you some wonderful advice in her reply to you.
It is always worth having a consultant look you over and do any tests that need doing as they can recommend any medications that might help with your condition. Most of the members that get referrals tend to be to either Rheumatology and / or Pain Management Clinic, if you wanted to discuss these with your GP?
I genuinely look forward to bumping into you around the forum.

Hi Trisha, welcome.
I was diagnosed 20 years ago and your GP is right, there are no tests. However, there are departments who can help such as rheumatology, pain clinic and chronic fatigue clinic. It's worth asking him again if he can refer you. I've learned that you have to fight for help sometimes so don't give up. We are also here to help you if we can. Good luck and take care. Helen xx
I was seeing a rheumy and he diagnosed fibro, but I was discharged from his clinic as I couldn't be prescribed fibro meds as they contraindicated with the meds I already take. XX
hi there,
i how you feel my gp has been great up to a point. had me seen by back specialist who sent me for MRI scan and this only showed fatty tissue deposits in the back. he discharged from the hospital and returned to my Gp. since then i haev requested a referal and she was fine with this and refered me to rheumatologist which i see next month. fingers crossed that i finally get some answers, is it fibro or not.
if your gp will not listen see a different doctor. i a sure if you ask for referal you will get one.
