Dose anyone bite big chunks out of their tongues in their sleep. If you do any idea how I can stop it? Tried a gum guard bit through it.

hi,did you get your guard from the dentist? I had toothache and dentist made me a lower tooth guard hey presto no more toothache,i must have been grinding my teeth,,perhaps this would stop you biting your tongue? x

I do that- boy does it hurt! My dentist said it was due to grinding my teeth (and I assume missing them!!!). I have a guard for my bottom teeth. I seem to be able to use it for a few nights, then end up chewing it or finding it somewhere in the bedroom in the morning (how does that happen). When my grinding starts to wake my partner during the night I start wearing it again. It was made by my dentist and is hard wearing given the use it gets during the night. It also means my jaws are less achy in the morning.

I am a grinder too and have often bitten my lip and tongue, I also seem to try to EAT my mouth guard!

Hi Devonlady I have been biting the inside of my mouth both cheeks, the top and bottom lips and of course my tongue for about 3 years, my dentist made me a mouth guard to stop me doing this in my sleep but I couldn't cope with it but now I am doing it whilst I am awake and my mouth gets really sore and I don't know what to do

I hear you Im going to buy another guard, but i find it in the weirdest places. I have a dig bite out of my tonue, the dentist told me he might have to do some kind of surgery to correct the problem. But im epileptic so i could be having small seizures when im sleeping.

Thanks for all the replies. I do think this is a symptom of fibro. I have big while lumps on side of tongue now because of this which dentist thinks may turn cancerous so wants me to ahve them surgically removed. What is the point if I going to bite tham back again? I need something like a muscle relaxant to stop me biting in first place and this would stop the migraines as well hopefully. I had dentist make gum guard but that in itself made my mouth sore and teeth hurt. I also used to find it in the bed in the morning. I now speak with a lisp because of these lumps and catch them on my teeth when eating as well. A pain literally.

I had exactly the same problem and I've had to have two lumps removed, so I completely sympathise with you. Although the op isn't exactly pleasant, I think you should go ahead with it before it turns nasty. The maxillofacial surgeon I saw was very adamant that I had them removed, yes, the lumps came back, but the histology on them was ok, so at least one is reassured that they're not turning cancerous, which is not a pleasant one to deal with at all !

Definitely a general, not a long operation at all, but you do need to be under for them to get at the area without you pulling away, which is the natural response. I will be honest and say I was surprised by how swollen my tongue was post op for a few days, and certainly sore, but well worth doing to make sure the lumps are harmless. Feel free message me if you want more information, and particularly if you are in Devon I may be able to point you in the direction of a good surgeon.
