This is my first post on this platform, though I’ve done a lot of reading.
My husband and I have been offered IVF treatment due to a low sperm count but we’d rather find the cause and treat that rather than jump straight into such a stressful option.
I’ve heard people talk about Dr Ramsey and mention supplements but it’s all a bit overwhelming. What would your first steps be? Other than Dr Ramsey are there male fertility doctors that you’d recommend? What sort of prices are we talking about?
Really I’d love it if some of the mystery around it all was explained.
We’re in our early thirties, don’t smoke, and are a healthy weight - do you think we could still hope for a child?
At this point, any and all advice welcome (and good news stories too!)

Everyone is so different, I would get an appt with a sperm specialist (ask your clinic/dr to recommend) but also do some research online. Impryl helped my husbands sperm. I think really it depends how long you have been trying, the egg tends to do more work than the sperm so from experience (my eggs are rubbish so we use donor ) as long as you have good eggs you tend to be ok (my husbands sperm isn’t great but with good eggs we have got pregnant) Although again everyones story is different. You can test sperm quality whereas you can’t test eggs. I would get the appt with a clinic and ask their advice x
Hi lovely, if you want to to do a bit more investigation before going to see a fertility urologist I would suggest starting with a sperm DNA fragmentation test. If it comes back normal then at least you know that the low sperm count isn't indicative of a deeper problem, and hopefully some lifestyle changes and supplements like Impryl and Proxeed will help. If it comes back with high fragmentation then I would go straight to Dr Ramsay (I personally wouldn't mess about with other urologists as most of them don't specialise in fertility like he does) to try to figure out the underlying cause.
You can get the DNA frag test done privately through Fertility Solutions (fertilitysolutions.co.uk/dn... with no referral needed. It costs £500. I know it seems expensive but it's sooo much better to investigate these things earlier rather than later. Fertility Solutions has clinics in London or Bucks xx
So I know everyone is different, and it's hard to know what could be causing the low count. So I would get an appointment with a fertility clinic and get some advice on what they recommend in your situation if you've had NHS IVF suggested to you then the wait times can be long so its worth getting the ball rolling now. But there are things that your husband can do to help, like if not already doing it, taking a multivitamin like proseed and maybe changing what type of underwear he wears. I say this as a friend of mines husband had low sperm count on two tests 3 months apart. He got given a referral for further investigation and was advised to stop wearing jeans to switch to lose fitting underwear and lose jogging bottoms he was a driver, so he spent most of his day sitting. By the time he got his initial appointment, his sperm count had more than tripled not long after they got pregnant naturally.
I’ve heard of this website testhim.com which might help - not used ourselves. But they offer consultations and also an ultrasound for £175 which seems a very good price. I heard of the website through our nhs clinics fb page so I felt it must be legit but like I say haven’t used it ourselves
please first change life style. Ask your partner to wear boxers 🩲 and lose clothes no hot water shower or bath. Use mild water. Also ask him to start proxeed men one schtay in morning in orange juice and one evening in orange same same time gape. You take as well proxeed women improved formula. Our urologist recommended us and it’s amazing. Also please order book called it’s start with egg by rebbica fry 3rd edition. You can order from Amazon and follow it accordingly. It’s amazing and got knowledge in depth. So lots of your points will clear. After following this wait at least 1 year. Try naturally because ivf is last option also it’s really hard journey emotionally physically. You got enough time according to your age. So please try these first. You can check DNA fragmentation as well for sperm. Also get checked your tubes too if they are okay or blocked .
It depends how significant the male factor issue is. Lifestyle interventions can help but sometimes people are just unlucky. We saw an andrologist (urologist specialising in male fertility) local to us in south Wales who was really helpful but essentially no cause was found for our male factor infertility. Sometimes clinics can do IUI which is like a cycle monitoring and they insert the sperm so they have less far to travel. The success rate is less than IVF though. With significant male factor the best chance is with IVF and ICSI where they select the best looking sperm.
We had similar and felt we were rushed straight to IVF so we saw a male fertility specialist just to make sure my hubby had been properly looked into. Didn't find anything we could treat but glad we did it xx
