Early blastocyst on day 5 (IVF) - not able to grade properly. Anyone else had this and gone on to have positive pregnancy test?

Hi everyone,

After a few months out, I’m currently going through IVF again. We only had one blastocyst make it to day 5 but they can’t give it a grading because it’s in the early stages.

they have advised putting it back in but having been through this so much, I’m worried this is not going to be successful because it’s an early blastocyst. Has anyone else had an early blastocyst transferred on day 5??

I had 2 morulas transferred and got my BFP this morning so it can happen. Its still early days but 🤞. I would say transfer it, it's better back where it belongs than in a lab ❤️

Ah thank you so much Tara! I can’t tell you how reassuring that is. I’m heading in for a transfer at 1pm- I’ve just been through so much like many of you that I don’t know if I can cope with another definite negative. Along time to wait for that.

Congratulations - so incredibly happy for you. It’s massive news! Xxx

Embryos can change from early blastocysts to full blastocysts in a matter of a few hours so there is always a chance. Good luck 🍀🤞

I haven't had a day 5 morula put back but we did have two such embryos and both developed into very good grade embryos on day 6 and went in the freezer, so there is definitely hope. Very best of luck! I hope it sticks :)

Ah thank you so much, they went ahead with the transfer because they said it would be best for it to keep developing in my uterus. All we have to do it wait now I guess. I’ve just been through this so many times I don’t know how I’ll cope if it’s negative again xxx

Some clinics grade early blastocysts. An early blastocyst is not the same as a morula. It has formed into a blastocyst however the cavity is a lot smaller. After one cycle I ended up with an early blastocyst too. I got the call in the morning to say that I had one 'good quality' early blastocyst. The transfer was scheduled in the afternoon and they told me that at that point it had reached full blastocyst stage. Unfortunately it failed for me.

Regarding the grading someone in here said that grading is a snapshot in time. If you think about it a grade just represents the view of the specific embryologist at the specific time the embryo was checked. A different embryologist at a different time might give it a different grade. (Un)fortunately this doesn't mean that grading is meaningless. As I understand it is not proof just indication, if that helps.

If your clinic thinks it's worth transferring then it has a shot! All the best!

Ah thank you so so much.

I’m so sorry it didn’t work for you. It’s so hard doing that wait for it to then be negative. I hope and pray it does happen for you soon.

they told us yesterday morning (just before the transfer) that it was now a 1-2AB. I think it’s what you’re saying it is I.e. just very early stages…

Just have to wait and see now. I find this part so hard xxxxxxx

Yes, ours were developing slowly and couldn't be graded at 5 days. They transferred 2 to give us a better chance. Now 25 weeks along with twins! Embryo grading isn't an exact science. Wishing you lots of luck xx
