Magnetic-Activated Cell Sorting (MACS): A Useful Sperm-Selection Technique in Cases of High Levels of Sperm DNA Fragmentation

Hi Everyone

I am struggling to find an IVF clinic which offer the MACS technique in the UK as part of ICSI.

There is literature out there which supports its ability to sort sperm cells and choose those with Low DNA fragmentation.

Currently it is only offered in clinics in Europe (Czech republic and Spain). I have emailed the HFEA asking why this has not been added in their add on section.

What I am struggling to grasp is why IVF labs in the UK have not invested in this technology if it genuinely can help sort good sperm from bad. Hoping someone out there who has probably got some more information on this can help.

My partner had 42% DNA fragmentation- MACS didn’t make any difference for us, but IMSI did. It’s a far better technique and there is a reason why many UK clinics have stopped using it and use IMSI instead.

One clinic - CRGH - also do PMSI, which I also tried; although it was IMSI that eventually helped us get pregnant x

I think Cambridge IVF might - it’s on their website as an add on. Like Hayleh, we used IMSI (at the Lister) for 52% dna fragmentation. we found one good sperm on our first round to make one blastocyst (from 14 eggs) and I’m expecting a baby boy in a few weeks. Best of luck with your journey x
