Where to get bone broth?

So I don’t want to overthink it, it’s broth made from bones but I know it’s very good for you. I just picked up some liquid beef stock made from beef bones in Waitrose. Does that count? Rather than buying expensive stuff? Thanks!

Hi my husband makes bone broth. We save all the bones from the meat we eat and pop them in the freezer then when there’s plenty we throw them in the slow cooker for 24 hours with water and an onion or any bits of veg that needs used. Then we strain it and pop it in ice cube bags for the freezer. It makes food super delicious and it’s full of collagen xxx

Hi lovely

The Waitrose stuff is certainly better than nothing but I find the supermarket brands are watered down quite a lot. A good broth should have a gelatinous consistency at room temperature from all the collagen.

Like Boo, we also save bones in our freezer and make a batch when we have enough. Our butcher also sells bones for £1/bag, so you might want to check that out if you have one nearby xx

That’s a good idea asking the butcher actually! There’s one across from my work I could try. It’s funny you mention the gelatinous consistency as when I use meat juices for my gravy it gets very gelatinous. Definitely going to give it a go. Thank you x

Bone broth is cooked much longer than stock so it won’t be the same. You can buy bone broth from Ocado and I would imagine Waitrose. I have also seen online firms selling it so have a google. It’s super easy to make though-I do chicken bone broth in the slow cooker, leave carcass plus any leftover bones and cook with some water on low for 24 hours. Recipes say to add a little vinegar to help leach the bones but I never bother, just use a little salt. It’s so nice to drink out of a mug. I have read beef bones take longer to cook to really get the nutrients out (48h). Xx

Thanks, I’m going to stock up on bones and make my own but for now I’ve been lazy and Amazon’s it 🙈 I know that’s bad but I’m doing my best 🙈

Oh don’t worry-I have bought it as well! I just like to use chicken carcasses to make most use out of them-I hate wasting that kind of thing. I drank bone broth to help with morning sickness and the smell of it cooking I found hard to deal with so buying was a godsend! Xx

I started stim’s today so want it ASAP hence buying it, nothing like last minute 🤦🏽‍♀️ Will hopefully continue it for a while like you then!

Oh my god yeh it stinks we put it in the garage 😂

Once we have had a roast I just pop the Bones in a soup pot, adding in maybe a bay leaf, an onion, a carrot. No need to prep too preciously. Bring to the boil and then lower to a slow boil for around 8 hours. For condensed broth you can put it a little higher and keep the lid off. Keep an eye on it though to make sure it doesn't all boil away. When I have the lid on I usually leave it at about 1.5 or 2. Not high at all.

I would just check the salt content as stock can have very high levels xx

Yeah I thought that too. Actually thought a bit of salt would help it as it didn’t taste great lol so there’s not a lot in it. It’ll do until I get the better stuff. Thanks!

🥰 like the others I make it and freeze it in little bags. Then make soups or just add some frozen veggies to a cup of it. It’s soooo good for you xx

You can actually go to a butcher and ask for bones. Some give them out for free and some charge a bit. But that is a great way of getting some nice bones to make broth with x

Hello, yes you can use bones from cows, you can buy the bones from a butchery or place where they sell meat and just boil them in a substantial amount of water with vegetables of your choice, I personally include fresh chilies and parsley of course add salt to taste :-). Remember to boil for a long time almost 3hours.

We also buy bones from the butchers. When making the broth also add apple cider vinegar, sea or himalayan sea salt, celery, carrots and garlic. A blogger called the preggers kitchen has a good recipe. Drink it daily.
