For some reason, despite good follicle numbers in the lead up to retrieval, only 5 eggs were collected. 3 of these fertilised with donor sperm and only 1 made it to blastocyst this morning.
The blastocyst was a grade 1BB. The embryologist did say that it was a very early blastocyst, but my transfer was very early in the morning, and it hadn’t yet been 5 full days since egg retrieval.
I’m thinking the worst and already think this cycle will fail. I’m just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and can offer any advice from their experience?

One of my twins is a day 6 4bb - so on day 5 she wasnt classified as a blastocyst to be able to freeze that day so having a 1bb and it’s not been the full 5 days I would bet it would have been a full blastocyst or even hatching by day 6
Also there is some evidence that girl embryos are slower growing ones hence why more boys tend to be born from IVF because had you had a 3/4/5 stage blastocyst they would have chosen those over your 1bb and the doctors believe my day 6 is my girl twin x
Thank you, that’s really reassuring to hear and I hope you’re right. Would seem right if it was a girl that she had me worrying from day 5. I hope whatever our embryo may be has continued progressing over the course of the day and is doing ok in there x
Hi Sarah.
I have had a FET of 2 embies, they were graded higher when frozen but after the thaw one was a 1BB and the other a 2BB. I left the clinic really deflated after my transfer as my previous 3 transfers had been much higher graded embies and they still didnt take, I felt really worried that these tiny ones didn't stand a chance!
Well I am currently 8 weeks with twins! They both stuck, to say I was shocked is an understatement. Just goes to show anything is possible ! Please remain positive. Have hope and say a little prayer for your emby 🙏🏼
Have another scan next week, im still really anxious but hopeful that they are both healthy and growing well still xxx
Congratulations! And also thank you, it’s so reassuring to hear that this little emby stands a chance.I hope everything continues to progress well with your pregnancy x
Can I ask how you got on? I had an egg collection last Friday and they got two eggs that both fertilised. One was discarded on day 5 and the other was an early blastocyst that seemed to have slowed down its growth. They couldn't be sure if it would grade high enough on day 6 to freeze, which was the original plan (so I could do a further two cycles of the collection and get a store of good quality embryos), so I had a fresh transfer. Now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if a low quality blastocyst will just lead to either no pregnancy or an early miscarriage.
By little 1BB blastocyst has just popped out to make it’s presence known to the world as a 16 week bump this week. Still going great. For all I felt there was no hope at the time, it’s proving me totally wrong. Wishing you all the luck in the world with your embryo 🤞🏼🤞🏼 X
Hi saraht23,Your story had given me hope I had my day 5 early blastocyst transfer at 12.30 today my little embryo was not a full day 5 due to the fact I had icsi on Friday 17 the injected my egg at 12pm. The Embryologist was happy with the quality she never graded it tho 🙏🏻🙏🏻Xx
Our little miracle is currently asleep on me, she’s just perfect. She was small from the start, small at birth, and now you would never know, she’s caught up and then some. An absolutely thriving baby girl, and I couldn’t be more proud of her. She’s still stubborn and knows her own mind though, so it doesn’t surprise me in the slightest that she decided to successfully implant and grow, against all odds.
Hi Sarah- thank you so much for your reply and your story is so inspiring to me and your daughter sure sounds like a special one. Best wishes to you! 🥰
I am still feeling so anxious and my beta is on Tuesday (May 17th). I feel like all the very little symptoms I had esp the mild sore breasts are starting to fade. I only had mild cramping here and there a few days after the transfer. No spotting. Do you recall having any symptoms during your 2ww? And how early did you get a positive? Thanks again
Very mild symptoms in my 2WW, in fact, I was convinced the cycle had either failed or that I’d have a chemical pregnancy or MMC like the cycle before. Obviously that was not the case. I think I was about 6 or 7 weeks before the morning sickness hit me like a train, but otherwise I had very little in the way of symptoms right the way through my pregnancy. Complete opposite of our previous failed cycle where I had huge sore boobs and obvious implantation pains. Try not to symptom watch too much as it doesn’t always give a true indication of what is going on in there x
hi all, sorry to jump in the conversation but your stories give very positive vibes for people like me looking for hope 🙏 none of my embies made it to blastocyst and I am devastated.
I wanted to ask 2 things:
- What stimulation protocol did you use for your embies to reach blastocyst? We are with a male factor, hence will do ICSI again / possibly IMSI and I am 40.
- Did you have any special early pregnancy support ? I will be on Cyclogest 2 x 400mg, Cabergoline, Levotyroxine, Prednisolone 25mg, Enoxaparine 40mg
Thanks for your tips and sorry if it goes a bit off topic
