Congratulations to everyone who has welcomed a baby following IVF/egg freezing.
I read a study that said the ideal number of eggs that is most likely to result in a live birth is 15-20 eggs. I think I saw another that said more than 12. I also understand that aside from the complications of OHSS, being over stimulated and retrieving more than 20 eggs could result in lower quality eggs.
So I was just hoping to hear successful stories and how many eggs were retrieved in the batch that resulted in a baby?

Hard to remember exactly but I think I had about 20, 7 of which made it to the stage they wanted. 1 failed fresh, 1 failed natural fet and then success with 2nd natural fet. Now expecting another with natural fet. I do think it's pot luck though as heard a lot of stories of less quantity and quality and success stories. Good luck x
I had 3 eggs collected (low amh), 1 transferred and am currently 31 weeks pregnant...and have 2 in the freezer! I really believe it's to do more with quality than quantity for sure! Best of luck! X
First round 4 eggs collected/fertilised. 2 made it to day 5 blast. The fresh 4AB transfer failed (1 5BB frozen to try later).Second IVF round 2 collected, only 1 fertilised normally. 3 day transfer of average embryo and I am 13 weeks pregnant. So there is hope for those of us with low AMH. I only had 2 follicles visible on my initial baseline scan and they did not have high hopes for me but here I am. Good luck to you xx
In my lucky cycle, I had 8 eggs (collected from just one ovary, though), 7 fertilised with ICSI, 3 made it to day 2 when 2 were transferred (but BFN), the remaining one made it to blastocyst, was frozen, transferred a few months later, and is now a 20 months old girl ❤️Good luck!
I really don’t think the number of eggs plays much a role - in my case we retrieved 17 eggs, 12 of those fertilised, 11 were still going strong on day 4 and then suddenly on day 5 only 2 made it to a viable blastocyst! But we did a fresh transfer with one and it worked, we now have a little boy aged 20 months, we recently did a FET with our one remaining frozen and it didn’t work.... 🤷🏼♀️ Good luck x
3rd icsi round was successful for us. We got 11 eggs, 10 were mature, 6 fertilised and all reached day 5 blastocysts. One was transferred fresh (our daughter) and 2 of the others were high grade and could be frozen. x
It’s about the quality of the eggs as much as quantity. We had 12, 10 of which were mature, 7 of which fertilised and 6 made it to a quality to be frozen or fresh transfer. We had one fresh transfer from that cycle with the ‘perfect’ 5 day embryo which failed to implant. We then had 2 frozen transferred with the next best ones which resulted in an early loss (dont know if one or both took but it wasn’t a viable pregnancy clearly) and then embryo number 4 which was an ‘okay’ day 5 embryo we are currently 38weeks pregnant with and have 2 frozen day 6 embryos still in freezer.
In summary ..... it’s mostly down to luck/perfect timing of that one certain embryo rather than the number of eggs collected or how many other embryos are in the freezer etc. There should be a focus on getting the best balance of quantity and quality in your treatment plan but even then, as you can see from our journey, the best ‘quality’ embryos aren’t always the ones that make pregnancy a reality so I wouldn’t get hung up on any of that really ☺️
Also I think most of us are describing out embryo freezing experiences after egg collection, but you have said ‘egg’ freezing in your post I’m not sure if it’s different if you are just planning on just freezing the eggs at this point without fertilisation attempts first so apologies if my story not as relevant xx
Thank you. It definitely is relevant! I am egg freezing which means it's inevitable that I'm going to lose eggs during the freezing process (embryos are more likely to survive) so I feel that quantity plays a bit more on my mind. But i just wanted to hear stories on success and quantity in general.
The ideal number is between 15-20. But there are many other factors that count being age the most important, even more important than number of eggs, AMH, FSH.
