Failed cycle

strawberriesandcream profile image

Hi all

Got my full on period on 8dp5dt. Firstly this seems really early to get my period when someone people aren’t even told to do a test until 14 days after transfer. Is this normal? Or does that suggest a problem with my luteal phase?

It was a 5AB embryo that was transferred. I have 3 slightly lower grade embryos in the freezer and this is my first failed transfer.

Wondering if anyone has advice on if I should push for any further investigations or ask anything specific before attempting another transfer.

Sounds so negative but I do not understand why the result would be different next time. I’ve had exactly the same spotting etc and symptoms as if this was a natural failed cycle.

Thanks ❤️

Hi, its quite common to bleed early, 8dp5dt is technically 13dpo. Basically even if you are on progesterone when your body knows its not pregnant all other hormones start to drop too and your natural cycle tries to kick in.

I am so sorry your round failed, its so gutting especially the first round, but it is also quite unusual for round 1 to work. I am sure a lot of people on here will tell you to push for lots of tests etc but I just wanted to say there is often an element of luck, and sometimes the best embryos don't implant and some of the worst do, so whilst round one works it has very little impact on whether round 2 will. its great you have so many in the freezer. I have a friend and her worst embryo on her 7th transfer worked - no rhyme nor reason that was just the one that was destined to be!

Masses of luck for whatever you decide next x

I think it’s hit me harder as this is my first transfer after 2 egg collections so I already feel like I’ve had 2 goes when I’ve only really had one. Your comments on luck are really helpful, and about the embryo quality. It’s hard to make sense of it all but it just shows there doesn’t have to be a reason. Thanks for taking the time to reply ❤️

Hi, I just wanted to send love on a tough day. I've had 2 failed rounds and I know how hard it is to believe it will work. My 2nd round was a 5AA and for no reason at all it just didn't work and from there it just felt bleak. I was having the same thoughts about further testing. I think it's hard when you don't have a solid reason or something to fix. I think just hang fire for your review and take some time to look after yourself, each time I have come away from the review feeling much more positive about the next go, they will be able to go through all possible options.

So this round the only change was a tweak in the amount on menopur. This time Instead of a 5AA I got a 4AB and a second which wasn't graded yet.

I hope you get some answers and they put your mind at rest xx

Thanks for the love 🥰 Yeah that’s exactly how I feel as you want a reason don’t you, so you can change it for next time. I just can’t bear the thought of just trying another one without changing anything and the same thing happening. I hope the consultant gives me more positivity when I speak to him and hopefully it was just bad luck and not my time.

Feeling more rational than earlier already. I hope you are feeling ok and things are progressing for you xxx

You have frosties too which is amazing, so you're obviously able to get good ones. Ive never had any to freeze so 3 fresh cycles. Won't be long before you're back in the 2ww again 😘 xx

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about this, exactly same happened on my first cycle last month. I came on my period 8dpt and was convinced something was wrong. And felt slightly cheated that didn't get to test day as I thought progesterone was meant ti stood bleeding. However, my consultant said it just means it didn't implant, was gutted as it was a 5AA but getting ready for a frozen transfer in the new year. And as others have said sometimes it's the not so high quality ones that might implant 3 frozen is great! Exact same as what we got as well . Wish you all the best for your future transfers X

Thanks for your message of support. Sorry to hear you have been through the same. Wishing you lots of luck for your transfer in the new year xx

I’m sorry to hear this, ah it’s just so unfair! I’ve also had two failed rounds and understand the confusion of not knowing whether it will ever happen, questioning how frosties of less quality could work, and deciding whether to do more tests or wait it out for luck of numbers! It’s a lot of uncertainty and I have no answers but wanted to wish you all the best going forward and to know you’re not alone as many of us are in the same boat!

You shouldn’t get your period until your are off your medications. High level of progesterone is not allowing your period to come. Next time check your progesterone levels after transfer, this is the only test that I would advise you to do at this stage. I am really sorry for your negative outcome. Stay strong 💪 we will find a way out of this ❤️🤗

I agree with Ranchu, definitely get your progesterone tested after transfer, or consider an ERA test xx

I feel like this too! I had the first sign of spotting at 5dp5dt .. so the embryo didn’t have long before my body said no! Thanks, will pick this up with my consultant xx

Oh that is a good sign that you didn’t had enough progesterone. I was on the same boat with 2 of my transfers, on our 3rd transfer we changed the clinic and they are checking routinely progesterone on transfer day. To no surprise they wanted me to have 10ng/ml as a minimum and I only had 7ng/ml which was very low. So I had to move to injections and pessaries. My 3rd transfer ended in another chemical but I didn’t had any spotting until I completely stopped my medications. Take care and good luck 🤞 🤗❤️

Hey, just wanted to acknowledge your post and tell you how sorry I am your first cycle failed. I know how that feels after recently experiencing the same with a grade 5AA blastocyst. I was so devastated, even though I knew it isn’t always successful the first time.

I took a few days off work (I also was quite unwell for a few days after) and I just binged watched festive movies and a Netflix series that I found funny - anything to make me laugh a little!

My doctor wanted me to take a couple of weeks to settle with the news before booking a follow up but I knew that wasn’t the right thing for me - so I booked my follow up straight away so I had a focus. I need a plan to keep my mind calm!

It’s a tough process, it takes a lot out of those going through it and whilst I don’t have any major words of wisdom, I think we just have to be very kind to ourselves and allow yourself to feel whatever it is you feel. Focus on yourself and what brings you calm and peace and look forward .. again I know that’s so tough to do, but trying to hold onto some hope is what helps me get through and I hope for you too.

I’m soon to start medicated FET process with a transfer in January.. I’m nervous, scared, anxious etc. But I’m just trying to keep myself as relaxed as I possibly can and I tell myself there’s no known reason why this won’t work. It kinda helps me! I have tougher days, and on those days I feel teary and quiet but that’s okay too.

Big hugs xxx

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and for your advice. I defo want to get a plan together with my consultant, like you say it gives you focus on what to do differently. Sending you all the luck for your transfer in January 😘

Hi..so sorry for what you have been through, I have had 3 failed transfers now, all excellent embryos and no reason whatsoever given. Like so many of the ladies have said already, a top quality embryo transfer could fail and often does, they say this is usually down to genetic issues with the embryo. I had a failed cycle in November and this time I have asked to hve my progesterone tested before and after transfer, something my clinic never have done! But I read so much about progesterone, I always bleed early and hve a short luteal phase anyway! My bleeds were 7dp5dt,9dp5dt,10dp5dt.

Im prepping for FET in the new year and have changed my progesterone to prontogest PIO injections as I have bled early on Lubion and Pessaries in previous cycles.

Hoping your FET is successful and you manage to get some rest over the xmas period x

Lots of best wishes

This is really interested as my spotting actually started at 5dp5dt so my body had already decided it wasn’t accepting it...doesn’t sound right to me. I hope the injections work for you, good luck for your transfer in the new year, hopefully that’s the solution for you xxx

The comment about progesterone is really interesting because I’ve asked about having my tested before transfer too. My consultant said I won’t need it because they give me 400mg pessaries to take twice a day which is more than enough.. and a blood test won’t measure the progesterone if I take them as a pessary anyway.

She said I can have one for my peace of mind but that it won’t make a difference to my situation. I’m having a medicated FET this next time so I’ll take progesterone again but my body should also produce it - think it’s still worth testing? Xx

strawberriesandcream profile image
strawberriesandcream in reply to XOXO13

I was on the same dose of pessaries as well. I will ask my consultant and see what he says. I think if they’ll do it, I would have it ... like you say for peace of mind if nothing else xx

XOXO13 profile image
XOXO13 in reply to strawberriesandcream

So I think they’ll say that because it’s not in the blood stream, you won’t get an accurate result. Because the pessaries are an addition to what your body produces right? That’s how I’ve understand what my consultant explained to me - I was getting so confused as to why she was telling me the blood test is pointless when you take the pessaries. If your consultant says differently though, let me know as I’m just genuinely interested.xx

I will defo keep you updated xx

strawberriesandcream in reply to XOXO13

Thought it was worth letting you know, because I started to spot at 5/6 dpt my consultant has said I should inject progesterone instead (Lubion). He said that with the progesterone I shouldn’t have bled that early so it could be a luteal phase deficiency. He’s also said because we can’t be certain if that’s the reason for the spotting, I can take another drug Clexane which helps with repeated implantation failure or miscarriage. Just in case that helps you at all xx

XOXO13 profile image
XOXO13 in reply to strawberriesandcream

Ah that’s interesting - thank you for letting me know! I’ve started my FET treatment now so when I go in for my first scan, I’ll ask for the blood test to check my progesterone levels before transfer to see what my levels are.. whilst injections aren’t nice, it’s something worth tying for sure if it helps 🤞🏻Best of luck xxx
