Karyotype is DNA test for you and your partner (46xx and 46 xy). DNA fragmentation (DFI) is for your partner to check the DNA fragmentation of sperm. Did you have miscarriage before? If yes, you need to check both.

Hi Schnow,

Thanks for your reply 🙂

No we just had our first ivf cycle fail (2 transfers - 1 with 1 embryo and 1 with 2 embryos). We had 5 blastocysts from a mild ivf - 3 didn’t implant, 1 died from thawing and 1 frozen but we are worried there is an issue with the embryo or we need to do more testing.

Doctor this morning advised we could do Karyotype testing.

But I am trying to decide which one to do - Karyotype or dna fragmentation

We never have been pregnant and neither have I don’t home pregnancy in these two transfers to see whether I have even had a chemical pregnancy or early miscarriage

They're testing two totally different things so you can't say one is better or worse, they're testing for two different types of problem. You can't do anything about the results of the karyotype test, if it shows a problem then that's a genetic problem affecting all of your partner's sperm. DNA fragmentation in the sperm changes depending on his current state of health and can be improved a bit with treatment. Luckily karyotype testing showed my husband doesn't have a genetic problem with his chromosomes, but he does have severe DNA fragmentation which is the cause of our infertility.

How can fragmentation be improved?

It depends what turns out to be causing it, you'd need to consult a urologist.
