Only 2 embryos. Need help to make a decision pls!

Hi ladies, So just had a call from the embryologist that out of 4 eggs retrieved yesterday, only 2 were mature and fertilised.

We were hoping to do a genetic testing but not sure if its a viable option with only two eggs?

We have been given two options -

1. Transfer both embryos tomorrow (day 2)

Or

2. Wait til day 5 to see if the embryos survive and make it to blastocyst and then proceed with genetic testing, and do a FET the next cycle

I'm really confused at this point. Please share any feedback, or your experience.

Thanks!

Hi Bambii....See if you can wait till day 3. I just transferred 2 day 3 embryos and IN 6dp3dt . Hoping for the best. Good luck

All the best to you.

Only issue is that I don't want to risk a multiple pregnancy. But i also know that the embryos may not make it to day 5, which is a risk and I know the womb is a better place for the development. But was really hoping to do a genetic testing.

I have been in this situation before (twice) and had a day two transfer both times - they are better off where they should be. You should only push to day 5 if you have enough embryos to lose some along the way xx

Thanks for the reply.

You definitely have a point.

May I ask if you had success with transferring both on day 2?

Very confused.

Hi, I had a chemical on one of my day two transfers so I guess you could call that success. I have a bit of a convoluted history of miscarriages etc so I am probably not the best person to gauge success rates on!

I have had four rounds. I have only gone to day 5 once and that was because I had 7 embryos on day 2. All other rounds I have had 3 or less by day 2 or 3. I have had up to 3 put back at any one time but I am older (40's). I did get a BFP from one round but it was a MMC - this was when 3 embryos were put back and it was a singleton pregnancy - so 2 embryos doesnt necessarily guarantee multiples.

Originally IVF never even tried to go to day 5, they always transferred on day 2 or 3.. I am sorry I totally get why you are confused and I am only giving my perspective. I have seen other people on here take 2 embryos to day 5 and both of them survive but personally my clinic recommended not to.. but that doesnt mean it was the right thing to do!

I hope I am not confusing you even more xx

Thanks for this, very helpful.

I know I will be taking a huge risk losing the embryos if we wait til day 5. And we may not have anything to transfer in the end, which means we'll have to start from scratch.

The only reason we're even considering the latter option is because of the genetic testing, which only makes sense to do at blastocyst stage.

Hi Bambii. A personal decision to be sure. Some would prefer to transfer as late as possible to know that they're better embryos and are more likely to survive and wouldn't want to go through the torturous 2ww maybe unnecessarily. Myself, I have recently moved to the camp of wanting as many back as soon as possible to see if they survive in me and not have my clinic throw most of them away! Haven't put my money where my mouth is on that front yet, though, as I am currently in 2ww with my one 5 day blastocyst from 11 eggs. x

Hello! You definitely have a point there. I feel like I will be rushing if we decide to transfer tomorrow (day 2), and our original plan was to only transfer one embryo as we don't want to risk multiple pregnancy. But on the other hand, we may have no embryos to transfer in the end as we are playing with only two embryos.

This is all very stressful. :(

All the best with yours! Lots of prayers!

P.s. Did you decide to do a genetic testing on your embryos? If so, was it tested on day 5?

No genetic testing. Not at that point (mentally) in my journey yet. Also, just had the one 5 day blast, so don't have the numbers for genetic testing, unfortunately. x

There is no wrong decision. It's just whatever you feel comfortable with and what is best for you. x

Hi, others have made really good points already. Just wanted to add my personal decision would be to have them put back on day 3. Unless that somehow effects your funding for next round etc? Couldn't they wait until day 3 to see if they are both 8+ cells? Then make a judgement call?

Doing genetic testing means doing a biopsy on the embryo, it has risks. I wouldn't personally risk that if I only had 2. I didn't do testing on my current cycle, but the reasons I would consider it in the future would be if I had a few more MC pregnancies, or if I had another few cycles with unexplained lack of implantation. I would still struggle to agree to it unless I had more than 2 embryos though. Just my personal feeling, I just want my embryos back inside of me as soon as possible.

Just for your info, my current cycle I had 3 embryos, 1 less I would have done a day 3 transfer, but all 3 made it to day 5. The experience made me upset because statistically I could have realisitically had 0 left at day 5, the worry was too much for me. Thankfully that did not happen and I had 1 embryo transferred (untested) at day 5.

Best of luck to you, this is a hard journey with difficult choices for us all 🤞🙏 xxxx
