Hi, for those have had a successful cycle, could you advise how many fertilised egg of yours managed to survive to day 5?
I have failed one cycle, in that one, I had 20 retrieved, 12 eggs fertilised but only one made to day 5. It failed.
I changed to a more expensive clinic as the doctor says their incubator and culture are more expensive ones in the market.
I use the same stimulation medicine but I only have 11 retrieved, 6 fertilised egg this round. The nurse tried to comfort me and said that sometimes the quality is better but I have also heard that more eggs will have better chance.
I am really disappointed. I would love to hear your stories.

I had 12 retrieved, 10 were mature and ICSI was used, 7 fertilised and 4 made it to blastocyst of varying grades. I was 34 at the time and our problem is male factor x
So nice to hear that. I am not doing too badly so far then. It’s really good rate a 4 out of 7. We didn’t identify the factor that may have caused infertility.
Sorry to hear about your failed cycle. The statistics I’ve been quoted are that 25% of fertilised eggs make it to day 5 blastocyst. So from your 12 fertilised, 3 should have made day 5 and so on. From my own experience this was what we got from 12 fertilised eggs.
Do you know if any have made it from your current 6 fertilised? You would expect 1 if not 2 to make it to day 5
Hi Jenny_ I had wildly different results on 2 different cycles with the same medication, only a couple of months apart. It's hard to predict. Sometimes you can produce more blastocysts with less eggs. It's down to luck. You might also want to look into nutrition and supplements and taking dhea before your next round, it greatly helped a friend of mine.
Hello Jenny - I just wanted to reassure you that there are exceptions to every rule in this game . I have had 7 fresh cycles and I have NEVER had an embryo reach day 5 blastocyst as there were only ever 2 embryos left by day 2/3. My first child was a good day 3 embryo (2 put back 1 took) and my recent second child was either an average or a ropey day 2 embryo. (Again 2 put back) Remember it only takes 1!! Good luck X
Thank you. It’s interesting to know. I did ask the doctor about the day 3 transfer. He says if an embryo doesn’t survive to day 5 in the culture, it wouldn’t survive inside the body.
Unfortunately, a lot of hospital nowadays doesn’t offer day 3 transfer. By only offering day 5 transfer, they can increase their success rate. I think that’s the only motive. The statistics nowadays are really not comparable.
I had 20 eggs collected, 16 were mature, 13 fertilized, 5 made it to day 5 blastocyst and 4 more made it to 6 day blastocyst. 6 of the 9 came back pgs normal which was really good (4 normal out of 5 day Marxists and 2 normal out of 6 day blastocysts).
The more I see the more I think the key is pgs testing. A few of my top graded blastocysts actually came back with chromosomal abnormalities. Grading doesn't mean much. Pgs testing trumps grading.
We did consider the pgs testing but I was worried that taking a cell out could damage the blastocyst so we opted out. My first cycle scared me. I was so confident before we started but now we do everything possible to reduce the complexity. Thanks for your comments.
In also thought about that but after talking to the Dr he assured us that the cells are removed from the placenta part so wouldn't damage embryo. Anyhow after recurring miscarriages I wanted to eliminate the chromosomal abnormalities so at least I'd know it was a uterine issue of the transfer fails...best of luck 🍀
Hello! We had 6 eggs retrieved, 4 fertilised and all made it to day 5. One was implanted, two frozen (one on day 5 and one on day 6) and the last wasn’t good enough quality to freeze. It can be so variable from what I’ve read. I was a bit disappointed with only 6 eggs but then they did better than I expected over the next few days. Xxx
Wow, 100% survival. They are indeed very good embryos.
Hi Jenny,
I had around 15 follicles, but they only retrieved 9 eggs. 6 eggs fertilized but only 5 made it to blastocyst (5 days). My problem is my fallopian tubes. We used 1 embryo in our fresh cycle and the other 4 were frozen.
I have a friend (their fertility problem was from her husband). She only had 3 follicles, doc only retrieved 1 egg. This egg fertilized and she had a 3-day transfer. She's currently 8 weeks pregnant. Sometimes you only need ONE that sticks! Good luck!
That’s really good results. My cause of infertility hasn’t been identified. My blood tests are all normal and husband semen tests are good too. It’s very annoying that we do not manage to have a baby.
I had 37 eggs collects, 21 fertilised, 19 made it to blastocyst but some not good enough to freeze. We got 11 Frosties from that cycle.
I have heard that often in cycles like mine where lots of eggs are collected, the quality suffers so hopefully your nurse is right and you will do better this round than last xx
I felt like a whale! 😂 but like I say it’s definitely a case of quality not quantity when it comes to eggs. Will be keeping everything crossed for you x
Hi Jenny I had 11 eggs collected, all fertilised, 7 survived till day 3 but sadly only one survived till day 5 but now I am almost 9 weeks pregnant with this little fighter 💪
It's sad we have lost all 6 and have nothing frozen but I am focusing on this little one.
12 collected, 9 mature, 8 fertilized and 5 made it to blast in a freeze all cycle. Transferred 2, one of which stuck and is due end of July. Other 3 still in the freezer.
Very often it's a question of quality rather than quantity. Are you taking any supplements? My Dr had me on CoQ10 for a couple of months before treatment and we got very good results considering I was about to turn 39 when we had EC. No way of knowing if it was down to the supplement but it can't hurt. Best of luck this time round hon xxx
For me, 16 collected and all fertilised using ICSI. Out of those 16, 5 made it to day 5 blastocyst so around 1/3 of our fertilised eggs. Had a fresh grade 5AA transferred which ended in a miscarriage so went ahead with a double FET of a 5BA and a 4AB and am now almost 9 weeks with one baby. I hope you get some great news about your eggs and you manage to get a few to blast stage 🤞🏻x
Hi Jenny. We had 17 eggs collected, 13 mature. 10 fertilised, 5 got to day 5. We transferred one and have one in the freezer. Hope that helps a little 😉
22 out, 5 made it however my last two eggs haven’t come out of the freeze very well so hoping they grow stronger inside me as I don’t think I could start again xx
Hi Jenny, we had 7 retrieved on first cycle and none fertilised. Fast forward 3 months and a change of drugs and 9 retrieved, 6 fertilised and 4 made it to blastocytes. Every cycle is so different and they learn from each one xx
Well done. 4 out of 6 is really good rate. I didn’t change stimulation medicine because doctor was quite happy with the number last time. It’s the same medicine but it didn’t react as well this round. Maybe I am just getting old and caused the decline in number. Hope one or two would make to blasto stage.
They told me that it was my egg quality due to age. So I added several vitamins as well, I’m not saying they helped but I used DHEA, Ubiquinol and PQQ, myo insiotol and N acetyl cysteine xxx
I had 3 fresh cycles only 8 eggs ever collected, only 1 made it to blastocyst and was frozen this resulted in BFP and a healthy baby. Try not to get hung up on the numbers.
I had 14 follicles, 10 eggs collected, 9 were mature, 8 fertilised. 3 made it to day 5/6. I had 1 transferred and 2 frozen. I was disappointed with this number, but they were all top quality and it actually worked and I got a BFP yesterday. Still early days obviously, but never even got this far pre IVF. Good luck! xxx
1 successfully implanted and now 27 weeks pregnant.
Our infertility is entirely unexplained. Good AMH; good sperm results. The only thing the gynae could find was polyps: I had two removed in 2018, and everything seems to be on track now. It is a bit scary when you consider that only around 25% of the eggs make it to 5-day blasts, but don't let statistics stop you. I have a friend with low AMH who just went through her first cycle: 9 collected, only 1 made it to blast; she just had it transferred and got a bfp! It only takes one. Go for quality every time! Good luck.
Thank you. You are right. I hope one will manage to survive to the end. Embryologist told me yesterday there were only 2 survived to day 3. If the transfer needs to be cancelled, they will let me know today. I haven’t received call yet, so hope i might still make it this round.
