Long Protocol Max Amount of Drugs

I'm getting the maximum amount of drugs to make sure success in producing eggs. At the time i thought that was good because i wanted to take whatever i can to make this work however, curiosity got the better of me and i have been looking into it more and surprise surprise i am worried now. I have read a lot about the disadvantages of this even in older women and mild IVF should be the way forward. Lots of drugs can result in an increase in chromosomal abnormalities there for not resulting pregnancy that lasts longer than a couple of weeks. Does anyone have any thoughts on this ?

Hi Eeek. I assume you have talked this over with your specialist? Sometimes a more gentle approach is the way to go. Have a chat with him/her and see what is said. Good luck. Diane

I just got told that's the protocol because of my age. I didn't question it at the time, due to my lack of understanding, but i will do. Thanks

I had better results on more drugs- my dose was increased on each of my three rounds and on the third round I got four blasts, of which one is now growing in my tummy as a twenty week pregnancy.

Oh wonderful news, that's so good to hear.

If you’re worried- have a chat with your specialist so they can explain their reasoning for choosing the drugs you are on. I was 36 at the time of my stimulation and ended up on two types of stimulation drugs for a part of my treatment. The fresh cycle was not successful but we’ve had a frozen transfer from that round and I’m 15 weeks pregnant and so far the Harmony Test has shown low risk for Downs, Edward and Patau syndrome.

I would check that the study showing increased chromosomal abnormalities compared women of similar age on high dose vs low dose - as over a certain age the overall risk of chromosomal abnormalities goes up regardless of conception method. Sometimes things aren’t straightforward when looking at these studies.

Congratulations, it is so good to hear positive outcome stories.

I know i really should! I should also probably stop using Dr Google. I didn't think i would become this obsessed and would just go with what the experts told me. I'm annoyed at myself!!

Don’t be annoyed with yourself- it’s natural to feel worried and to want the best options for yourself. There is so much information (sometimes misinformation too) that it is so hard to know what to do. I would say don’t be afraid to ask questions from your clinic and ask them to explain what they are doing and why. Xx

I’m on cycle 3 now. I have low amh and am slow/poor responder. The first cycle short protocol I was on a fairly high dose - 300 merional. I got 6 eggs; 2 fertilised and both were out back in at day 3. BFN. Cycle two was long protocol and my drugs started at 225 menopur but were upped to 375. I got 8 eggs but only four mature. 3 fertilised but they all arrested and didn’t make it to transfer. This cycle I was on clomid for first 7 days and bemfola 150 from day 2. Egg collection is on Wednesday this week so I won’t have an idea on the comparison with the higher drugs until the end of the week. But so far my cycle with the highest results ended up with the worst results. I think that is to do with the meds but maybe it’s just my crappy eggs!
