Trying to conceive with one ovary.

Hi everyone,

I don’t even know where to start.....feels a little weird.

I only have one ovary, I had ovarian cancer when I was 18 (I’m now 31). The infected one was removed (it actually wasn’t anything like an ovary in the end due to it being a 12” tumour).

My remaining ovary was later operated on to remove cysts.

I’ve since had an abundance of internal scans and check ups and have been told my remaining ovary is healthy, looks good etc everything I wanted to hear.....blah blah blah.

But I just really want to know if it’s any more difficult t conceive. My partner and I are going to start trying this month. And I’m already panicking that I won’t be able to (not going to help I know!)

There’s so contradictory stuff in the internet about single ovaries ovulating every month, only occasionally etc.

Any help, tips etc what ever is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

K

It varies. I have only one ovary and ended up needing donor eggs, but I have a work colleague who has only one ovary and conceived without any problems three times. So until you start trying you won't know. But usually if you only have one ovary without any other problems you ovulate most months from that side as several follicles are normally recruited from both ovaries with it being a race to see which one develops first :) so the fact you only have one ovary shouldn't affect things.

Good luck.

Hi rah rah,

Here the give you a boost! I only have one ovary, my right one is missing, unexplained!! And my left is ‘wonky’

I’m 40 , and due to partners low sperm we have had 3rounds of IVF , the first ending in m/m at 7 weeks and then two failed rounds.

Doesn’t sound postitive so far I know,

BUT , after three months of clean living, no alcohol, caffeine for us both and taking supplements on the hope for a successful 4th and final go we conceived naturally!!!!

Just had my 7 week scan , heart beating and baby looking perfect!!

Don’t give up! Us one sided wonders can still do it!!

Good luck xx

Thank you so much for your replies. It’s really good to hear that it CAN happen.

Guess I just need to start trying. It’s so daunting but so exciting at the same time.

Good luck to you both.

Xxx
