Timeline for male IVF donor

Hello everyone. I work away a lot and my work has, politely, requested that they have an idea of the process for men during the IVF for my wife. I have the day off this coming Friday to submit my sample for fertility checks. When do I need to be present in future, and for how long? How many appointments do I need to attend with the fertility clinic, doctors, and roughly when on the timeline? Thank you so much for your future replies!

Tbh my partner hardly came to any of my appointments. When the process actually started he came on egg collection to submit his sample and that was it. He came for my embryo transfer but didnt need to and in fact the other ladies were there alone. So basically you wont need lots of time of work at all. Good luck 😊

Thank you for your reply! I’d love to be there but I can’t justify it with work. Which appointments are mandatory for men? From my understanding so far, I’ve got sample on Friday, is the first consultation with the clinic mandatory for me? I understand I have to be there for egg collection (fresh sperm fertilising), is that right?

You only need to be there to provide samples and thats it 😊

At the consent appointment you will need to sign HFEA forms for the treatment. Perhaps you have already done this

Hi Dunla, no not done this yet. So 2 mandatory visits so far: 1. consent form/appointment 2. semen sample on egg collection day?

Seems about right. Blood screening also compulsory. My husband and I have usually had this done at consent appointment

My husband had his blood tests done at our local surgery but we were paying privately. I had mine done at the consents appointment.

I would just say that if you miss the first consultants appointment you may well feel very left out of the process and it’s a lot for your partner to have to explain back to you.

I would also say that, if your ivf round doesn’t work (though hopefully it will), you will want to be there for the follow up consultation to talk about the results.

Agree with above, egg collection is the only one where you HAVE to be present, but bear in mind that your partner will have been sedated for the procedure so should not be left alone for the rest of the day so it’s a full day unless someone else can be with her.

The only other thing I can think of is you probably want to be present for the injection training, and at my clinic this is when then also get you to sign the consent forms which they have to witness you signing (hfea regulations) so you have to be there for that as well. I don’t think many clinics would let you start treatment without doing consent forms but some clinics can arrange for them to be done over Skype.

Unfortunately, egg collection will be short notice time off as it will all depend on her reaction to the drugs.

Hi :)

In my clinic there are 3 appts my hubby has to be present for 1) blood samples 2) consent forms, we also went through ours meds at this apt & learned how to inject, took about 3 hours 3) egg collection, when huhby also gives his sample. Like the other ladies have said my hubby was advised to take day of egg collection off given i will have been sedated.

Good luck with your cycle.

Thank you all so much, it gives me a clear idea of the process and sheds light on a previously dark area. Thank you for best wishes, and I extend the same to you.

Hope you get all sorted. Be prepared for things to change at short notice though as sometimes they do. Wishing you both the very best of luck 🤞🏻

My partner came to one appointment where they showed us how to prepare and do the injection, and then he came on egg collection day when he also provided a sample.

He was also present on the transfer day. I think this is also an important one for you to be at as I found this a very emotional day and I was trying to take it easy so was good to have his support. He wouldn't have wanted to miss this either as we got to see our embryo. He's also good at asking all the right questions.

Yes I agree about day of embryo transfer. It is very special to see the little embryo shooting across the ultrasound screen and nice then to take it easy together the rest of the day, if possible 😊

Yes! We went for a lovely dinner to take our minds off it. It wasn't successful in the end... but we had a future success!! My partner was there for that too of course :)

agree with all the above. With the other appts, I would suggest seeing how your partner feels- I went to a couple on my own and found i was getting too emotional. Having him there was a massive help BUT that was our personal preference. it really just depends on how folk cope and that's where we're all different x

Hello Sir! I hope you're doing good. I'm really glad to read that you're having an IVF treatment. You have a greater chance of conceiving with IVF than naturally conceiving. Moreover, you can have a baby with lesser efforts. It's a really successful technique. The average time for an IVF cycle (from consultation to treatment) is 6-8 weeks, but depending on the specific circumstances of each the path is similar for every patient. What varies is how your body reacts to every stage. You'll have to take a lot of days off from your work, as the couple spends half a day at the clinic, during treatment. But this will end in 6-8 weeks (if your case is regular one). As IVF is not a single day process, it's a cycle of treatments. I hope this helped you. You should consult your doctor if you have further misconceptions. Stay blessed sir.

The main other things I can consider is you most likely need to be available for the infusion preparing, and at my center, this is the point at which they additionally motivate you to sign the assent shapes which they need to witness you marking so you must be there for that also. I don't figure numerous facilities would give you a chance to begin treatment without doing assent frames yet a few centers can orchestrate them to be done over Skype. Tragically, egg gathering will be abrupt announcement time off as it will all rely on her response to the medications.
