NHS appiontment during private treatment.

Hi Ladies, Im currently on my 7th day of injections for IVF. It is my first round and we are privately funding. I had been waiting on an NHS review appointment after finishing Clomid and of course this appointment is on monday which is the same day i have my final scan before egg collection at the private clinic.

I am able to make both appointments as one is am and the other is pm. My concern is (apart from it being a lot in one day) is that when the NHS consultant hears I am undergoing private treatment will she not put me on the NHS funding list? Im worried they will take me off their files and I will then have to go through the whole referal process again from scratch if this round of Ivf fails. Has anyone been in a similar position?

Hi lou79, I have just had NHS funding approved and am going to my first appointment on Tuesday at my chosen clinic, I know there are lots of criteria regarding eligibility for NHS funding and I think not having had previous fertility treatment might be one of those criteria - albeit I know this varies considerably depending on what CCG you fall under. I'm not really sure how you would manage this :-/ if you disclose then you may well no longer be entitled to funding but at the same time when you apply for funding you will need to sign a consent form confirming the information you have provided is correct - so I think you might have to tell them. Hope this helps x

Hello Lou79, I would check the NHS funding criteria for your area. Where I am it said the NHS could refuse funding if you have private treatment. When I asked about this further they said it was limited to those who don't respond to the injections on their private cycle. I know some other areas reduce the number of NHS cycles you can have if you have private treatment. The NHS won't know you've had private treatment unless you tell them but of course access to your private medical notes might help the NHS!

I think I would call the hospital and ask what's involved at this first appointment. If it's any kind of scan or blood test say you can't make the appointment anyway and ask when it would be possible to rearrange for. You can say you're going on holiday (for 3weeks!) or working away at the moment - anything! Hopefully by the time you reschedule you're private treatment will be finished and you won't need the NHS appointment anyway!

Good luck! Try not to stress x

Thanks for the replies! I have moved my appointment to late August. I should know by then if this cycle has worked or not. I live in Northern Ireland and we only get one NHS funded cycle here so I dont want to jeapordise our chances of not having it should we need it. Nothing is ever straightforward is it :-(

As far as I am aware they may refuse you due to being able to find it your self.

Not many ways getting round it as either way the HEFEA will know you have had a cycle because that is the governing body.

But to be sure perhaps ring and give them a scenario case and see what they say

Good luck

Hi ya! When we applied for NHS funded IVF noone looked into our accounts or job situation so i doubt creteria is can you /can't you afford it. Also main creteria was living children (but noone of us have any).

After 1st unsuccessful cycle i got pregnant naturally and had a miscarriage but it sort of speed the clinic up to arrange my next treatment somehow (as i was chasing them for couple of months before). So i doubt they refuse you a funding just becauseyou had IVF already (Aspecially privately).

So just relax (well if you can) and take it easy with this cycle and hope it will be big fat positive for you and no NHS help needed!!!!

A x
