Hi - this might be a silly question....but is the UK sea too cold during pregnancy to swim?

Anyone have any idea?

Hi Eb20, I don't think it's recommended to swim in cold water when pregnant as our temperature regulation system is less effective during pregnancy so easier for us to become hypothermic than a non pregnant woman. X

That's what I thought - really missing swimming.

Thanks for your response, I needed to be reminded x

I’m currently on holiday and been in the sea a few times but it’s been very warm so it’s help keep me cool. And I only went in for short periods of time xxx

Yes been on the IOW. And I’m 11 weeks pregnant. I have felt fine since it cooled me down in the 30 degree heat and I enjoyed having a few dips in the sea xxx

I don’t agree with the above advice. It’s fine to swim in the sea when pregnant! Our bodies are not less effective with temperature regulation. We just run a slightly higher basal temperature due to hormones etc.

You just have to take care as you would if non pregnant. And best not to swim in 1st trimester if on vaginal pessaries as risk of infection as cervix gets irritated by pessaries.

I know pregnant women who do open water swimming! Really helps their fitness etc during pregnancy.

Hi hun, I think you should be fine as long as you make sure you don’t become undercooled.

I did some research myself as at 15 weeks we went to Lake Annecy which is a lake with glacier water so really cold and as it wasn’t great weather decided to wear a wetsuit but last week we were on the dorset coast and been swimming everyday. Yes bit chilly but not staying in for hours and no problems at all! Also have had a few dips in the Thames with the hot weather and also fine. Currently 26 weeks. I think hot water/baths are more worrying with overheating.

Like I said, don’t stay in if you start to feel colder. And then warm up again.
