Is it possible to be pregnant with twins and miscarry one? Got u/s and one sac was empty the other was fetal pole no heart beat. I thought I was 9wks (according to period) but u/s says 6wks. Hcg level thursday was 28,000 now (saturday) 21,000. Is it possible to miscarry one and the other survive?

Yes it is, I'm living proof. My mother lost my twin around 12 weeks. I went to full term and have had no problems x

I'm sorry you've faced this. If one's trying to decide how many embryos to transfer during an IVF cycle, one should know that it can be an emotional and difficult decision. If you've been ttc for a while, you may want to increase your chances by transferring two or even more embryos. You may also think "Twins!". You're hoping that you can be done with IVF after just one pregnancy. But this may also be the case of your overall health and age respectively. With IVF, your primary goal is to have a healthy baby. When transferring double or multiple embryos, your chances of having twins or multiple births also goes up. Just like risks to the baby's and your health!! One should understand this clearly. They name the following challenges associated with multiple births. For example, almost 60% of twins aredelivered preterm. 90% of triplets ARE preterm!! Then those might be life-threatening maternal complications. Those complicationsare two times higher among twin pregnancies and maternal death is almost four times higher!! Also multiple births increase the risk of low birth weight in infants. Affecting the long-time well-being of these children. Different studies show different results. One states that single embryo success rates were 36%, compared to 35 per cent for double embryo transfers.Another study showed a 45% success rate for SET and a 42 per cent success rate for DET. Here's what is usually advised to patients who're facing this choice.

You should have single embryo transfers if you: Have a favorable prognosis for IVF. Are 38 years or younger. Have good quality eggs and embryos. Have not yet attempted IVF.

You may want to transfer two or more embryos if you: Are over the age of 38. Have undergone multiple IVFs cycle with no success. Have an unfavorable prognosis for IVF.

Judging from those stories I've read on forums, it's possible one embie vanishes in the run. 'Cause it might be weaker than another one. Or your body may reject more than one. 'Cause it cannot handle the double pregnancy..Ladies write this happens. Some place back 2 or even 3, but end up with 1 only. All the rest disappear unfortunately..There might be so many underlying conditions for this..

I hope things have got to their places so far.
