Living with the reality of this disease can take its toll. Not only is our organ health affected, but our general well-being is challenged. Luckily, some of the things that we do to heal our liver and bodies in general can also positively impact our mental well-being. I call this the “science of happiness.” And I wrote a picture book about it with my six-year-old son.
I did this because, I realized how some of these changes SIGNIFICANTLY impacted my mood for the better. And I wanted him to have the same tools embedded at an early age. I’ll explain what I mean in the book description, below. Suffice to say that the lesson I took away was: if I teach him how to seek out his own happiness through natural activities that boost endorphins, serotonin and dopamine, he may not turn to life-altering habits (comfort food, gaming, alcohol, etc) to do those things for him. Something I could’ve benefited from in my life — particularly when I had a rare genetic issue waiting in the wings.
About the project:
“Finn & the Feel-Good Martians” is a picture book inspired by and co-authored by my son, six-year-old Auggie. The book acts as a “how-to” for readers to understand they can influence their own feelings of joy, confidence, focus, calmness, happiness, and positive energy.
The story follows Finn as he learns to summon his “feel-good” messengers—Endorphins, Serotonin, and Dopamine—by doing simple actions like getting sunshine, getting physical movement, eating a healthy meal, petting a dog, playing a sport, and much more.
We started a kickstarter to get the book finished. People who pledge early get special rewards like signed hardcover editions, exclusive illustrations, downloadable activities, stickers and a virtual meet-and-greet with author & muse :).
Please message me if you are interested in supporting the book. I think the message is highly relevant for those who struggle with keeping their spirits high in this journey. ❤️
