Hi all, I have read how good black coffee can be for your liver, and since I have stage 2 fibrosis from Nash I thought maybe I should try to learn to drink it. I fast for about 18 hours everyday and only eat 2 meals a day. Every morning I have a big cup of green tea on an empty stomach with no problems. I thought maybe I should replace the green tea with black coffee because the coffee might be better for my liver, Can I have both everyday? I purchased some quality decaf coffee beans and made my 1st cup of coffee (1 tablespoon coffee to 8 oz. Water) and drank half of it after a meal. Within a 1/2 hour I got extremely nauseous and did a lot of burping and got really bloated. Thank goodness I didn't drink it on an empty stomach. I am looking for advice and info/tips on drinking coffee to help heal my liver. Thanks.

Both are helpful in NASH and you can certainly do both. One thing about the coffee is it should be brewed through a paper filter. There are two chemicals that can be harmful that are caught by the filter. Decaf is fine. Don't know what would make you nauseous in particular but we all have our unique responses. It is the phytochemicals in the coffee that are beneficial and if you are new to the coffee scene your body may think you are crazy. Whether you want to develop a tolerance or not or drink more green tea is a valid choice.

Thanks for your reply. I brewed it with a paper filter. I am gonna try it a couple more times, but If it still makes me sick I guess I switch to all green tea. I'm gonna try the ground to be a little coarser so maybe it won't release as many chemicals. Do you put butter or milk in your coffee, And do you ever drink at an empty stomach?

Jkf1. I agree black coffee is tough. Never drank it before. I usually have 1/4 whole wheat bread on stomach in morning before drinking per gastro doc, but coffee is suppose to be good for you. Sometimes I skip the morning and consume at about 10, maybe you can try a later time.

Hi, i have been drinking about 4 cups a day without filter, i will filter now! Does it have to be black coffee though is semi skimmed milk ok?

Yes, that should be fine. It's the sugar that's the worst culprit

Hi, I don't have a coffee machine. I am just drinking instant coffee really. Do you think I'm doing myself any harm? Do the pros of drinking the coffee outweigh the cons of not filtering it?

I don't know of a study comparing instant but my guess would be that the benefits outweigh the risks. There are two chemicals that are filtered out by a paper filter during brewing and they may filter the brew they turn into instant.

I drink it first thing on an empty stomach and do just fine, one thing it does do is loosen up your digestive system

I drink 2 cups of black coffee straight up nothing in it first thing every morning, usually start with coffee then have my breakfast. When I get to the office I usually have another 2 cups in the winter, in the summer I stop and get ice coffee. I get lots of different coffees for my one cup coffee maker. I do french roasted, columbia, caramel. I mix it up, but it's always black. I love the deep dark Jamaica coffee, it's so rich. Good luck

I sure hope my body gets used to it. I was literally sick for a day and a 1/2! We have a local coffee place that sells all kinds of different beans from all over the world roasted fresh. I know I bought quality beans and next time I am going to make sure that I grind it very coarsely and give it a splash of non sweetened almond milk to see if that helps.
