My doc has said I need a liver biopsy because my enzymes have been higher than normal. Had a biopsy several years ago, and he said I have scarring. That’s all. Is biopsy necessary or what about a fibroscan?? Thanks for your help!!

Hi Addieann

Not an easy question. There is a lot of different opinion in the medical community about biopsy versus imaging or fibroscan. Since you have a prior biopsy, you would get valuable information from a second as you would be able to measure the changes and have a good sense of how the disease is progressing. High liver enzymes are an indication that liver cells are dying so understanding that is smart. If your local team is experienced with liver biopsy it would probably be valuable. I've had 3 myself and I would like to get another at some point for comparison but I have no justification for doing it medically. Fibroscan is much easier and cheaper but does give a very different measure of liver status.
