In 2008 I was told I had an enlarged fatty liver and I believe my liver enzymes were elevated at that time. I was told to lose weight and nothing else was followed up on it. Then in 2014 I had an ultrasound for my kidneys and they scanned my liver and in the report it said "enlarged, coarse, echogenic possible fatty liver". No follow up was done. Now I had a nuerologist do blood work and tested my copper and ceruloplasmin levels and they are both elevated. I've done some research on those levels both being high and finding it could be a liver disease. Should I be concerned. I'm going to my primary care physician in a few days and will discuss this with him as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I also live in the United States.

Well, for whatever it may be worth, I'd request a consult with a hepatologist. The number of people who have had indications for years but no diagnosis until it was cirrhosis is very large. I wish I hadn't let my physicians brush off my indications. I went from a stage 2 to a stage 4 before anyone got serious about answering my concerns.

Could I go to a gastroenterologist as well. I thought I read that somewhere. I don't think I have any hepatologist in my city.
That is a problem a lot of us have. There are too few hepatologists. Hope for a good gastro but just keep in mind that many of us have had to travel to find one. Ask lots of questions and learn all you can
I have just had a scan for my thyroid. In the report it says that the cyst in my liver is unchanged from my previous CT scan! I had not been told about this cyst by my Dr until a locum told me. I have therefore had this for at least 15 months without my knowledge. I’m pretty disgusted.
It is a challenge. Doctors decide what is best for you to know and withhold a lot of information. That works until it doesn't. With the liver they ignore a lot, which can result in a bad diagnosis later. It is one of the reasons we advocate for early screening of at risk people for NASH AND NAFLD
Run do not walk to a better care facility institution. When you say "Your primary care Doctor it almost sounds like you are tied to the VA. Regular Doctors are NOT even close to deal with this I have found. I do not know what state you live in but I am having to move from West Texas to Ohio (beautiful area) to get to a Hospital called The Cleveland Clinic because after being told I had a "Fatty Liver" I now have cirrohsis and I know my life clock is ticking. study and find a Hospital with a good reputation for this condition and where you can get definitive word on where you are at. I was diagnosed with a fatty liver in 2014 (never told what that meant and my primary care is just getting around to ordering a EGD. I was told that no surgeon would touch me due to platelet levels in my blood. I wish you luck but please do not stall this off early detection is key to a possible cure or at least a longer life and better quality of life.
Well seen my Primary care physician and he said to see what the nuerologist says on Friday since she's the one that ordered the test. But he said I may have to go to. Hepatologist or a Gastroenterologist to have more test done and a liver biopsy done. I'm afraid of I've had a fatty liver since at least 2008 that it has gotten worse.
