I am glad that Dr Mosley is now advocating IF, and that they only give him credit for helping to popularise 5:2, and not for inventing it.
...but I think that telling people that they can lose weight quickly, and suggesting that anyone 18 or over, not underweight, pregnant or breastfeeding can eat 800 calories for up to 12 weeks is irresponsible. If it is "being trialled by the NHS" people might get medical supervision?
Generally, short-term, I think that eating less is not as good as eating nothing (fasting), and getting ketosis and autophagy... and living longer.

I can attest to the fact that fasting absolutely is the most brilliant way to lose weight. It teaches us many things. I, for one, learned that I feel better when my body is healing itself, and it begins to heal during fasting. The longer the fasts the better I tend to feel. Also I learned that all the food cravings go away once you begin to give your body a rest from all the sugars. It's almost like we're trying too hard to refill our energy stores constantly and our body can't handle that, it just stores all the excess as fat, and it's only when we stop shoving food in our mouths that our bodies can have a rest and clean out the fat stores, which in my opinion is really fantastic.
I think of the process and it makes me laugh a bit, at how we have been conditioned to eat so much, without questioning it. Like, we are going to die if we don't eat three meals per day. That may be true if we are extremely anorexic people, but the majority of us all have a little chub on us that we can afford to lose, and many of us a lot of chub (like me).
But, back to fasting, it feels wonderful, my body feels like the energy inside of me increases it's vibration and I feel light and tingly and beautiful inside and out each time I fast, I feel like my body is 'cleaning itself up', kinda like when you see a hoarders house, and then you see a team of people go in and clean it all up. I feel like I've been hoarding too many donuts and cookies and they're stored away as fat all over me, and now I'm fasting so I am letting my body clean up all that mess and return my body to a cleaner state. Lowering my A1C levels, lowering my BMI, getting rid of stored toxins, and cleaning up my fatty liver...
I can feel all of that happening. Not to mention that when I look in the mirror, I am getting slimmer, and slimmer feels good. Really good. And, fasting is a lot easier than people think, you just gotta realize your body is healing.
The hardest part about fasting is the sugar withdrawals, they feel like you're starving, that starving feeling isn't your body starving, it's your body wanting more sugar. Once you break past the sugar withdrawals, you'll realize you're not actually starving at all.
Essentially no way to starve, when you have a lot of stored body fat, because your body will utilize it for energy.
Can you tell I love fasting? I do.

Yeah, well... if you think of a litter of puppies all fighting to eat all the food before all the other puppies, you kinda can imagine it's how we as children all had to do (get that last cookie before our little sister gets it) and if we had siblings to compete for food as kids, especially treats, it only makes sense that when we grew up we would make darn sure we got more than our fair share, because of course we want the power to eat the first cookie, the middle cookies and by golly the last cookie too. I think that's where I went wrong in life, always trying to get the last cookie. You know? But I realized that those extra cookies are showing, and my body is bulging in places bodies shouldn't be bulging. Haha
So I learned fairly quickly that if I just stop shoving cookies in my mouth - that might be the solution!
Fasting proved to me that it was. I've loved it ever since.

I think that you are doing amazingly and your enthusiasm is contagious so good for you and of course we don't need lots of stored fats...

Yeah, and I am feeling really good. I love fasting during the week when I am at work, it's great for my tummy and great for my budget! I'm not spending $7-15 a day on lunches. I am doing the 23:1 fasting now Monday - Friday and burning a lot of fat, and feeling my body detox. Saturday & Sunday I eat pretty much any time I want, although I still limit my carbs and sugars to very low numbers, or not have any at all if I can help it, since I am pre-diabetic.
Jerry, have you noticed, when you fast, feeling like your body has almost no stress? I have noticed how my stress levels have dropped way way down, and I seem to recover much quicker from stressful events when they do happen. I noticed my emotions are far more stable, and I think much more clearly and even more caringly (new word I invented just now).
When fasting, I feel grounded, and peaceful. More intuitive to things it seems also.
I find it interesting, when I tell people that I am fasting (in my real life) how concerned they get. Interesting because it's still the norm to worry more about not eating than eating, even whilst most people passing me on the streets are quite overweight. We have a society of 'eaters' but not a society of 'fasters' - I just wish it were a bit more balanced, so we had a society of people who do both equally. If we all fasted (restricted calories) equally to the amount of times we take in calories, maybe we could all maintain a much healthier weight. Non-food for thought.
Hi WM, this is very interesting and I think that what you are discovering is how much better you feel having lost weight. Being over weight causes lots of extra strain on our bodies especially our hearts and so much so obesity is a major cause of type 2 diabetes. If you think about it being over weight is like carrying an extra burden and 24/7...
I've eaten whole foods all my adult life and I am in tune with my body and its needs, I'm 5'10'' and my ideal body weight is 140-145 lbs I have a 30" waist and 38" chest and I struggle to maintain my weight as I'm around 135/136 libs at the moment. As well as being a coeliac I have microscopic colitis and keep that under control with diet and I don't eat anything for 12 to 14 hours most days.
I have lots of energy as I eat well but I do not over eat I just switch off as soon as I've had enough. I just don't like feeling that I've stuffed myself as it is the opposite of pleasurable to me. You see having microscopic colitis and having learnt to live and cope with it has given me something that is whoosh way above most peoples heads and that is I appreciate feeling well and how good is that. So I am content with myself and am driven so have lots of energy and nothing stops me. And I believe that you are sharing a similar emotion of well being because you are getting in tune with your body and loving every minute.
You are a great advocate of fasting and fasting sensibly rather than using it as a starvation diet that makes some crash and burn...

I think someone ie me needs to say that you can - and should - cut out crap without fasting. I worry a bit when I see "800 cal a day" or "Don't eat for (e.g.) 24 hours ... People new to trying to lose weight need to find a sustainable lifestyle they can do FOR EVER. I'm not underestimating the values of fasting but I think there's a danger that people who haven't read all the posts can get wrong ideas which could rebound on them.

HI BG, I share your concerns about safely dieting fasting and eating in general. I post articles about fasting so that we can collate them and F&F covers all aspects of fasting so it's to encourage members to do it safely and discuss all aspects to find what works for them.
I think that we should look at our bodies holistically and find the cause and treat that rather than the symptom and see fasting mindfulness and having positive self esteem as aids to having a good sense of well being because we are in tune with ourselves and our needs.
I don't think it helps having top models who look like they've got rickets either!

When people are eating poorly - in quality and quantity - I would always prefer to address that first before proposing other fixes. It concerns me when fasting is seen as a 'quick fix', as I'm sure it does you.
Food is there to be enjoyed and we are extraordinarily fortunate, most of us who come to these forums, to have an abundance of food we can afford and enjoy, unlike some at other times and in other parts of the globe.
Yes, I agree. I wouldn't want a person who hasn't researched what fasting is, and how to do it going full on and just stop eating. That would not be good. And, you can't just go full force into fasting without giving up sugars first over a period of time anyways, that's just setting up to fail. When done correctly and with thoughtfulness and paying attention to how our bodies feel, fasting is a beautiful healing way to recover from a lifetime of bad eating habits, but it must be done with thoughtfulness and and underlying respect for your body and it's medical conditions.
