IF, not for everyone, but definitely for me!

Hi all, keep up the good work and fasting to your weight loss and health plans!

I personally started IF on July 18th 2019. I started with a five day fast...was meant to be a water fast, but after about three hours after waking on day one of my IF, i "needed" coffee, and just stuck with my coffee throughout the fast. After the 5 day fast i was then set for Mon,Wed and Friday fasting every week. I have usually one Keto/Carnivore meal per day on my eating days, but sometimes two. I was 13.5 stone starting, on 20/08/2019 i had a Dr appointment for my diabetic bloods (type 2 Diabetes is the reason i researched and researched before deciding this was the right course of action for me, personally) and whilst at the appointment i asked the nurse if i could weigh myself...i was surprised when the nurse said i was 78 kg (12.3 stone). I now fit in 30 inch waist jeans, something i have not been able to do since my teens. I get the results of my bloods tomorrow (Thur 29/08/19) and i am hoping my blood sugar should be back within normal range (i will post both weight and bloods). A year ago my blood sugar was 98, 6 months ago it was down to 72 but still way high, so i am hoping for a great result...watch this space!!

Good to hear about your journey! I'm dabbling with an odd fasting day here and there. Always good to read of positive experiences.

Will look forward to hearing how you get on tomorrow with your results! Good luck :-)

Thank you Cosmo!

i actually had great news...my blood sugar was down to 53...just 6 points above what is considered "within normal range (47)", and cholesterol (LDL bad cholesterol) was slightly elevated (which i explained was due to the high fat content when i do eat), but apart from that, every other reading was on point. Very happy chappy with the results so far. The Diabetic nurse now wants me to have another blood test in three months (i think she either thought this was a fluke or the readings were wrong lol) which i have agreed to.

The nurse was very interested to know what i have done differently, so i decided to educate her lol, and hopefully she will pass on this "education" to other Diabetic patients going forward.

When asked about my meds (8 tablets in AM and 4 tablets in PM) i told her i no longer wanted the symptomatic treatments and i had decided to take my health in my own hands and actually "get over" the Diabetes, tablet free.

It's now been 6-7 weeks since i last took any medication, and i feel great.

I feel the need to express that this course of action is not for everybody, but it really is for me.

Good luck on your own journey!

How wonderful! That’s fantastic news. So pleased for you! Thanks for the update. Hopefully your medical practitioners will take notes and pass on the success to other patients too. Well done!!

Hi, Bow666 , Welcome.

I was hoping you would come here (on Fasting and Furious) and tell us your experiences. I think they deleted my reply to you on the weight loss forum.

Dr Jason Fung puts some diabetics on an initial (medically supervised) 14-day fast... so what you are doing is "not very extreme".

Are you taking insulin and what other medication?

Have you clicked on the "Diabetes" topic for this post?

You could specify "Diabetes" as an interest or condition on your profile.

We look forward to hearing the results of your blood test.

Thank you also S11m!

Dr Jason Fung, Dr Ken Berry and another guy, i would like to say Mike something, have all been great inspirations to me, i watched, listened and put into practice what these three guys discussed in many a video (gotta love youtube lol) and what i really enjoy about these three guys is that they talk very open and honestly about the topics if IF, Keto, Carnivore, Insulin etc and they all put the medical stuff into terms the layman can understand, which i find refreshing.

You have said that a 5 day fast is not very extreme...and in the grand scheme of things i guess it's not...but to me it is and was.

I don't take insulin. I was taking Metformin and other meds, but i stopped all my meds 6-7 weeks ago.

I am still trying to find my way around this site, and with me only being able to get on periodically, by my next visit, i have forgotten.

Old age doesn't come alone lol.

Hi Bow666 firstly welcome to the Forum and well done for this interesting and positive introduction. And you're in great company for encouragement on here.

I'm pleased that IF is working for you so good for you and keep it up as you can reverse type 2 diabetes with diet and weight loss.

Jerry 😊

Cheers Jerry!

the plan is to reverse this uh humm "progressive and chronic disease" (it is true that it's both progressive and chronic...if you choose to do nothing about it and carry on living the lifestyle that led to the Type 2 Diabetes in the first place).

I will beat this thing as i am sure there are many on this forum that will also kick the type 2 Diabetes azz.

Just remember folks....take it all one day at a time, and if you should fall, just get back on and put the fall behind you (just don't fall 7 days a week lol or even 3 days a week).

As a fellow 'periodic' poster, I have just see your post. So very well done!! What great results you got!

The most I have done is a three day fast, but they say a five day is better. I may try it at some time.

And yeah, one day at a time and get backup if you fall.

According to Dr Mindy Pelz's "Fasting Benefits" chart (this is copyright, and I have asked her if I can share it here):

For "normal" people, the blood insulin and glucose goes down and stabilises after four days... but I think that for diabetics it can take a fortnight or more.

Autophagy starts at ten hours, peaks at three days and then drops to a low level after five days. (I think read elsewhere that it was 18 hours before it kicked in).

Ketone production starts at thirty hours and is still increasing at five days.

Intestinal stem cell production starts at 20 hours and stabilises at a high level at four days.

Immune reboot and musculoskeletal stem cell production starts at 20 hours and stabilises at a high level after three days.

I like your post mainly coz I am at 85.5(13.5) as of 01/09 and 78 would be a dream for me .... I'm going for 80 at the moment.

Couple of questions....

Were you working out during this period? If so how much?

Was your 13.5 stone on the 18/7 ?

During this time, did it disrupt your day to day ...work/home life?

Doing the 5 day fast was this your first ever fast or did you do some shorter fasts or time restricted eating before to get into it slowly?

The best I ever did was a 24hr fast and it was tough...I feel that I can do better and seen how similar we may be but you get better results is very encouraging and I think I can do as well too.....keep posting

Hi Twak, sorry for delay (i only get on here when i'm in work).

good luck with your goal/s...i know you will achieve if you are serious and strict with yourself!

in answer to your questions:-

Were you working out during this period? If so how much?.....not at all... my daily life as far as excercise did not change one bit, and i am a self confessed lazy sod lol.

Was your 13.5 stone on the 18/7 ?...13.5 was my weight before i decided to jump straight in, i started with a five day fast, only consuming coffee with a little milk for the duration and then straight onto OMAD (one meal a day) every other day, so MON,WED and FRI i don't eat, Tue,Thur, Sat and Sun i have one LCHF (low carb, high fat) meal.

During this time, did it disrupt your day to day ...work/home life?...it did not, the only difficult part, was finding i had all this extra energy and found it hard to get to sleep and was rising really really early, but i work shifts over the 24/7 period and have always been a rubbish sleeper anyway, but it did get difficult in those first few weeks, but i stuck with it and things are settling somewhat now.

Doing the 5 day fast was this your first ever fast or did you do some shorter fasts or time restricted eating before to get into it slowly?...This was my first, and i dove straight in...when i say dove straight in, i did research for months first to ensure i knew how to do this safely (for me) and whether it would be worth it, pro's, con's etc and i am pleased to say it has been very worth it for me.

a 24 hr fast is a great start, but just make sure your safety comes first! you may stumble and fall along the way (it's quite natural), the important thing is to get straight back up, dust yourself off, forget the stumble and fall and keep pushing forward. There are many many folk on here who can advise, support and help you on your journey, on days you are struggling, jump on here and let the other folk here know that and the help and support will come flowing.
