Day 20 disimpaction!!

My 13 year old son is currently on day 20 of disimpaction. He’s taking 8 adult laxido a day and 3 senna tablets at night (to be increased to 4 tonight)

He is still only having one bowel movement a day and it’s loose but not watery. More like a firm mousse.

His continence nurse said tonight for him to visit gp on Wednesday so they can feel his tummy for any remaining masses. she said maybe there isn’t a lot to wash out and the level of old poo might have already cleared so this is why he isn’t seeing much progress.

But my question is surely on this dose, even if there wasn’t much to clean out then he would still be passing lots and lots of water at least??

Any thoughts greatly appreciated!!!

is it possible he's not taking it all?

Yes he takes it all. I make his drinks up for him and watch him take his senna at bed time. His stomach is very bloated and noisy, you can hear it’s trying to do something! He actually had a looser poo last night so I’m hopeful things are starting.

He was up until 1am this morning in a lot of discomfort so maybe today is the day we get some progress

Hi,The state of his bowel movements will also depend on what he's eating and drinking.

My daughter's first disimpaction was like "clockwork" with old hard poo then lighter softer mushy poos until it was all brown water.

We then changed her diet: more fruits, veg, solvable fibre, increased liquid intakes. This means that every subsequent disimpaction the "watery/sludgy" brown poos come quicker and last longer. There isn't as much "bad" poo to clear because she's not eating as much "bad" food.

Laxatives, whether osmotic (movicol/cosmocol) or stimulant (senna/sodium picosulfate) always cause bloating as they're getting the bowel to work.

We eventually switched from senna to a small dose of sodium picosulfate as it definitely works within 6-8 hours. We could time it. She's been on 1-2mls for a few months and it's allowed us to reduce the movicol slowly.

All the best
