3 year old to use toilet

My 3 nearly 4 year old son is afraid of doing his poos on the toilet and does them in his pants. Sometimes he holds it in which causes it to be runny and very messy. I mainly feel bad for when it happens at nursery and they have to clean him up.

Any advice welcome for getting my son to use the toilet.

I would fir now pop him back into pull ups, take him to the bathroom when he needs to poo so he associates that's where you go. If he is withholding you may need to add a stimulant and stool softener to stop that happening. He needs to know it won't hurt to poo.

We did a toilet game, or if you still have your potty then take a bear or toy he can take to be a toilet toy. Music can help relax or reading a story.
