Night training - not sure whether to stop

Recently my nearly 4.5 year old decided she didn't want to wear nappies at night. We had been wondering about giving it a go to see what happened as she hadn't been showing any other signs but it has been 2 years since she came out of nappies in the day.

I expected for her either to have a few dry nights, in which case we would definitely carry on, or be wet every night in the middle of the night, in which case we would stop as this would mean she wasn't ready.

She has not had a single dry night and it's been about 4 weeks. However, there have been a number of nights that she's gone through until 6-7am before having an accident, and one or two occasions where she has told us that she has had an accident as soon as she woke up. It sounds like her bladder is so full she just hasn't got time to get to the potty.

We are really exhausted and I would like to stop and try again in a couple of months. But I worry that if we do that, she will lose the progress that she has seemed to have made - I wonder if she has started to hold her wee longer because there is no nappy? But I cannot be sure that this wasn't happening already, because when she was in a nappy she wasn't waking up so I had no idea of the timing of her wees.

I'm just not sure what to do and wondering if anyone had been in a similar situation?

She is still only young, essentially you are waiting for the hormone vasopressin being produced and that's something you can't control. There are things that you can do to help though, ensure that she drinks plenty of water during the day, this will help to train the bladder to hold more liquid, do not lift to take to the toilet at night as it only manages the issue and not deal with it, but do take her to the toilet before bed twice and make sure she completely empties her bladder, count to 30, you will be surprised how much wee comes out again. Don't restrict liquids after a certain time, it doesn't actually work . Have a read of this article bbuk.org.uk/wp-content/uplo... . Bedwetting is extremely common, i think in a class of 30 children (primary age) 1in 3 will still be wetting at night.

I'd go back to nappies at night and offer rewards for a dry nappy in the morning (perhaps pull-ups might be helpful so that she can go to the toilet easily if she needs to)

Hi, sounds a bit similar to our son, almost 5, but we’ve no answers sorry! We’re on a second round of night training for the eldest and it’s no better, now on month three and the progress has been from wet 3 times a night to getting him up at 1am giving an average of 4 dry nights out of 7. We’re persevering partly because his younger brother is fully trained and so big brother won’t entertain nappies now, but we’re exhausted too. He just doesn’t wake up, even when wet. It’s only when he gets cold that he finally wakens. We’ve tried reducing fluid intake but he’s not a big drinker in any event, he’s only ever taken a fraction of what his brother drinks. We used Jamie Glowacki for day potty training and both boys were done in about 4 days. However she’s of the school that night training is just one hard slog and recommends lifting, which I see ERIC doesn’t. Youngest son just took to night time from day with no problems at all (so far, he’s only 3). Not sure what to try next. Hope you are getting somewhere!

Sometimes depends on time of last drink and when she goses toilet before bed. Try her back in pull ups, and do a drink/toilet diary so you can see a pattern. Then you'll know her routine gor being wet in the morning. Baby steps.
