After Dis-impaction

I wrote to you all recently for advice about my 10 year old step daughter who has been having accidents in her pants for a number of years now. We finally talked her mum into putting her on Movicol and she had been on it since about February. She started on the highest dose and has slowly worked her way down to just two sachets a day. It was working well and she was starting to feel the need to go to the toilet so she wasn’t making any mess anymore. However; we took her camping last week and her Dad felt it was time to come off the Movicol as she was doing so well. When looking through her bag of clothes last week, I then came across two pairs of very soiled pants and towards the end of the week she had a very runny ‘explosion’ in her pants. Ever since, she has been having runny poos and has been going through several pairs of pants a day again. It’s not like a diarrhoea poo, it’s more like the runny poo from the medicine but that would be well out of her system by now. Is this normal? She now says she can’t feel it again so are we pretty much back to square one?

Thank you for reading all the way through!

Yes, you dont just stop the movicol, you should reduce extremely slowly, they should be on the maintenance dose for as long as the issue persisted in the first place. It takes time for the feeling to be able to go to come back and that's why it is so important not to just stop giving the movicol.

I also think the medicine has perhaps been stopped too quickly. It might be that she is impacted again and the watery poo is due to that.

It is so hard especially with older children. I found seeing a specialist nurse helpful and my child did too - was referred by GP.

Good luck
