Help with 4year leaking poo

My daughter has been taking movicol for over two years. We originally started as her poos were so sore and hard to push out she would hold it in for a week then be in agony. This was ok, Being on one movicol a day and in a nappyWas easy to manage as it was easily cleaned etc.

However started potty training at age 2.5 - pee is ok but poo has always been an issue. She will not

Go it’s as if she doesn’t feel it. There is no solid poo just leaking in pants.

Tried using pull up for comfort and explaining

To poo in it but not working.

Also at nursery now and not allowed pull ups

So has to wear pants.

she soils them 5-6 times a day. It’s As if she cannot feel it coming out.

I have been to Doctor at hospital and started disimpaction again along with dulcolax every evening 5ml. One sachet of movicol every two days (as everyone one day it was completely water ). I am at My wits end it is continuously leaking out and I don’t know what to do I’ve tried every thing

Have you completely disimpacted, got to rusty water looking poo, stayed there for 3 days before reducing the doses down very slowly i.e. one sachet every 3 days? It sounds like she may still be backed up hence the soiling. Nurseries cannot enforce a child to be potty trained, have a look on the Eric website as there is a wealth of information on this subject there.

Yes 10 sachets a day for 2-3 days. Reduced to around 5 a day was uncontrollable water so bad and dulculoax too each night 5ml. I’ve tried everything I think I might call the helpline today

Nursery change her accidents once-2 times but after that they call meTo sort it. I work full time and I’m a single parent I can’t be taking the time off work to do it. I’m at my wits end

They actually cant ask you to go in an change or take her home, there is very clear guidance on this on the Eric website. it sounds like you reduced the doses down too quickly once you reached the rusty water looking poo. it is always best to do it very very slowly. I would consider disimpacting again, take your time with it, it is not something that should be rushed.

It sounds like she's never fully disimpacted. I'm not fully up to date with the dosage for toddlers but one sachet is very small. Disimpaction dosages are usually huge. For instance, my 5 year old is on 2 sachets Cosmocol a day maintenance dose, but when disimpacting we work up to 8 sachets a day. Maybe give the ERIC helpline a ring?

Yes she fully disimpacted was up to 10 In one day then reduced it after 2-3 days to around 5 and it was still so watery and uncontrollable. She has to take 5ml dulculax every evening too at bed time.... so now we have settled on 1 every two days and still dulcolax every night. Very frustrating Do you think I should disimpaction again

Oh gosh. I'm not sure. Did you hold her at the brown water stage for a couple of days then gradually decrease the dose until you found her maintenance dose? It has to be brown water, not runny poo.

My daughter is 3 almost 4 and she is in movicol and she is still in pull ups and nursery are fine with it, I'd take it further to your Dr about pull ups in nursery

I went to the dr at hospital after a referral. He said he understands about the nursery not being keen on nappies. It’s because she can pee good with out one but stains underwear a lot as it is leaking out. I tried pull up for nursery but then she wouldn’t even try to pee she would just pee in the pull up. They don’t change them at nursery so they kept calling me to sort it- it’s very frustrating

That's horrible! The nursery needs looking at that's not fair on you or your little one

I find fibre powder, nestle optifibre or inulin help with my 3yr old, it bulks the stool so he has the urge to go more, and finds it easier to go, movicol just made him leak constantly and he could hold in the runny poo for days on end.

We used senna alongside the fibre powder for a while but he's off that now and just on optifibre.

Hi I am new to this and saw your reply. My grandson is 3 and 9 months and still incontinent. He’s on Movicol and wets and soils constantly. We clean him and don’t make a fuss. As a first step, do you think changing to a fibre based product might help? Both us and his parents are getting desperate now.

I called my Gp asked for fibre sachets or some sort of equivalent. Was made aware that she is too young and wouldn’t be suitable. Have checked in stores online and all for age 6+.

Hi I just read your post from 3 month ago have you managed to find any fibre supplement? I give my dother Culturelle kids which is for childrens over 4y and is helping her . I used to give her Benefiber which was very good but they stopped selling it . Culturelle is good as well but more expensive and she also needs to drink plenty of water . Ivana 🙂

Hey. No unfortunately not my GP said she was too young and doc from hospital acc rang me the other day too and didn’t recommend said keep up with 2 movicol a day. I do think she needs some fibre though even though she eats a lot of fibre foods I think it will help her

Movicol never helped my dother it made it worst I have been taking her to Dr since she was 3 y and they never done anything with her just keeps saying give her more movicol and see you in 6m time . Dr aren't interested they're don't take it as ilnes when I found Benefiber in Boots she had improve clean nickers and regular poos but unfortunately they stopped selling it so now we are on Culturelle kids which is so far helping and is for 4+ . She eats plenty of high in fiber foods but she does need that extra fibre supplement and plenty of water is very important . 🙂

It's always worth to try I bought it from internet bit expensive with p&p you looking at £ 20+ but it's worth it I have also read that optifibre is helpful so I will look for it I will try anything to help my daughter .🙂

I have the same issue with nursery school unfortunately just because it is on the Eric website doesn’t mean a school has to adhere to it they all have their own policies on intimate care I have been to various meetings with my daughters school about this and I’m the same work full time etc but one thing is they cannot leave your child in soiled underwear which means if you can’t get there straight away then they have to dealwith the situation themselves which means cleaning and changing them they do have a duty of care whilst the child is in their care.my daughter is the same I can’t really offer a solution as I’m just as confused myself she is still on 7 sachets of laxido and senna and is still getting constipated and over flow I just don’t understand what’s going on we have been thorough 6 disimpactions and one was in hospital which lasted 3 weeks. Sorry I can’t offer a solution but thought I’d post so you know your not by yourself x

I really thought I was alone. Rang doctor yday tried to get fibre sachets as someone recommended. They said nope she’s too young. And I checked shops they don’t suit for under 6 years old. Doctor recommended using suppositories which is nonsense .. will do a disimpaction over Xmas and see how I get on. It is so very frustrating and I just hope things get better.

I agree with others here, but also once cleared out, you usually don’t use duculax, just movicol
