Almost at the end of disimpaction.

Hi everyone. We staring disimpacting my son just over a month ago. We stayed at 12 sachets for 16 days. We had mostly rusty water, though there were often little soft specks. It stayed this way for about a week so we decided to start reducing the dose very slowly. We reduced by one sachet every 3 or 4 days. Small accidents would often happen, but were decreasing in size and were usually just a little stain. We have consistently been doing toilet times three times a day after meals and he has done a poo each time.

We are now on 4 sachets. At 5 sachets the accidents between poos increased again. They are only small, but started having a dry crumbly texture to them again. He has had the sensation to poo a few times, in his lower abdomen. Today he has not had a poo yet, which is unusual. Keeping his fluid intake up is tricky. He will drink his medicine, but obviously his fluid intake has reduced with his doses.

We're just starting to worry that disimpaction has not had the required effect if we are seeing dry flecks of poo in his pants again. We haven't reached 5 or 6 on the Bristol stool chart yet, so we are still slowly reducing. I am ewaiting for a call from the GP and hoping we can get a referral to a specialist.

I'm just wondering if what we're experiencing is what we should be expecting. Are the accidents something to worry about? Are we on the right track? It's so frustrating not knowing what's going on in there and the pressure we're having to put on him all over again.

Thanks in advance.

Up the fluid intake, the medicine does not count towards their daily intake so it is really important that they drink plenty of fluids on top of this. The medicine needs this to be effective. I would up the doses slowly and see if that helps and possibly add a stimulant such as senna to the regime.
