Should I reduce the dose

We have recently under gone disimpaction routine with my son for 3rd time. He is 3yrs and currently on 3 sachets a day and almost every day for last 10 days or so he has been going 3 times within a few hours passing type 6. I am pleased he is going regularly now but he still has the odd day (like 2 in last 10) when he doesn’t go and will have some light soiling or just dry skid marks. Does this mean on those days he is withholding? Or is it just leaking out? He can’t have blockage as he has been through disimpaction. It’s really confusing. I really wanted to reduce the dose so that he is not having such runny poos but not sure if I should. Any suggestions? Thanks

When my son was younger he was on 3 sachets a day and we reduced it very gradually like taking out a spoonful of the made up drink at a time. Eventually we got him down to a third of a sachet a day and then no movicol. Knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t have taken him off the movicol completely and I would have kept tabs on his pooing/not pooing and type of poo forever. As we are now in a position where he is in and out of hospital and his constipation is not controlled with medication. Another way round it would be to reduce movicol gradually and at the same time introduce something natural like flaxseed oil or prune juice or prebiotic/probiotic and see how they respond to that

Thank you for replying. Guess will try and reduce gradually then and see what happen. Just consistency at the moment when he does go is very loose so it doesn’t feel right I am sure the dose must be too high but then he still occasionally soils - its all so confusing and it’s so hard to get any professional advice or support that’s why these forums are so helpful.

It takes ages for it all to get back to normal (sometimes years) I think you’re doing exactly the right thing, just keep it as gradual as you can and stop reducing if soiling increases as you decrease meds 🤗
