So my 5 year old has finally achieved the passing of the massive stool. And a heap of gravy loose stools.
She feels so much better and is more herself. But I'm not sure now what to do. I've been told it needs to be like rusty water but it's more like gravy (with no hard bits in anymore) do I go to 4 maintainance sachets now or do I give her 10sachets and to keep going until it's like thin rusty water? I feel like she's passed all of the hard stools but I wanted ask advice.

On thank goodness! I didn’t reply when I saw your messages yesterday as others had but was thinking of you. So pleased for you both. On the disimpaction, keep going until it is the rusty water. There could be more blockages further up that will need a little more coaxing out. Your daughter will be fearful for a long time after this so always err on the side of too much Movicol to keep things nice and soft for her. Explain this is what the medicine does to help her understand and take some of the fear away. It’s also going to be important to get her to sit and try for a poo once or twice a day, about 20 minutes after a meal to help encourage her to go rather than withold. After a meal is when she’s most likely to get an urge so it will help her. Good luck xxx

I'll have a look now. Should I increase the dose to 10 then today or should I remain on the 8? I feel like going up to 10 is a bit dramatic as it's deffo getting more loose already.
As you've had such problems I'd go up to ten to make sure.
Then when I reduce back down what do I do? Do i just go down by 1 each day? X
Ive actually never done that. Maybe down to four as a maintenance dose with 5ml of sennakot. See how that goes and then reduce very very slowly until she's on one or two sachets.See what other people think too. X
I've just watched the video and it states 2 sachets daily until you get a type 4 poop. The only thing that's confused me is that the one nurse said you will know that you have reached disimpaction when your child knows they need to go and is not leaking. But I guess she means when they're on the maintainace dose. As currently my child is having difficulty with holding it in as it's type 7. I'll reduce by 2 each day from now as she seems so much better and stools are watery and like more yellowish in colour now.
Brilliant well done. As my daughter has had this for six years I've found that because the bowel stretches with all the retained poo they often lose a lot of sensation anyway unfortunately x
Aww bless her. I honestly hope this is a one off because it's been so distressing. I feel for anyone who has had to manage these conditions for a long time and for the poor little ones also. Everyone on here has been so supportive and I'm really appreciative of all of your help.
My little one seems to have had yellow watery stools and they've been coming away without much notice. However now all seems to have slowed down. Is that normal? She hasn't eaten for like 5 days so I'm guessing that maybe that's her bowel completely empty now?
This has been a total eye opener and I feel more needs to be done to help children with this condition. People just don't seem to get the help they deserve.
Hi I’m glad she finally let it out. Now she will have a runny poo for two days so what I did with my son is stopped giving him movicol for two days then then now he is in two sachet of them as maintenance.
With my son he’s often not been able to go after disimpaction. I think this is to do with tweaking the maintenance dose. It can also be because the disimpaction was not completed and there was not a full clear out. Monitor her poo really closely. Like you said it may be because she hasn’t been eating but tbh from experience this is a classic time for them to get blocked again. If it were me I would keep the maintenance dose high (like 3/4 sachets) and taper it down very gradually (like a spoonful at a time) and talk to the doctor about adding in some Senna if she’s reluctant to go. Also daily sitting routine, hot bath and exercise all help. X
I agree with Robinia. You have to gradually reduce after disimpaction. We were told never to completely stop it. Don't forget it takes up to 3 DAYS every time you change a dose for it to kick in. Monitor poos. A diary helps.
We did disimpaction last week then from Friday was back on maint dose of 4 reduced to 3 4/3 Sunday. Still on 3 4/3 until she has a decent poo which hasn't happened yet. Fingers crossed it does today. Then down to 3 1/2 and see how we go. That's the only way to do it.
You are right. None if us get enough professional help or advice. It's traumatic, stressful and hard work. It's just finding that magical combination that's works consistently.
Really pleased she has been. We never did a disimpaction as got to 4 sachets and then she let it all go but we did reduce slowly. It took a few weeks for our daughter to get over the fear of going so it is imperative you keep it soft for her for a while. Wishing you the very best of luck. Xx
