Hiya, Just wondered if anyone else’s child with constipation issues is hypermobile? I’m just curious as I do feel there may be a connection.

My son is currently waiting for trans anal irrigation system (all being well at apptmt with gastroenterologist and surgeon in a couple of months) so will post if they prescribe it 🤞

Hi Robinia

Both of my son's have Hypermobility. My eldest who's now 10 ( nearly 11) has just been scored 3 on the Beighton Score by a Paediatrician. He had constipation issues and was on Movicol for 2 years or more when he was toilet trained. No troubles now though.

My youngest however has had toileting issues for 4.5 years now. Paediatrician brushed Hypermobility under the carpet when I asked about it a long time ago. However, the Paediatric Continence Nurse who we saw for the first time in December 2018 thinks it is hindering him.

I've also asked this question on a Hypermobility Facebook page and there were a few people on there who agreed and their children had constipation issues.

I'm convinced that Hypermobility doesn't help the constipation as the bladder and bowel are both muscles. I'll be interested to see what they say about your son.

Xxx

Thanks for replying. I’m going to mention it at his next appointment and see what they say. Makes me wonder if others will post also. It just seems so beyond my sons control, as though his body literally can no longer do it without intervention. I’m praying they prescribe the anal irrigation system 🙏 and that it works!

I know exactly how you feel. I had to push really hard for second opinion to get us where we are now. With school it feels like I’ve had to educate them, having school nurse on board has helped. I also scan them every medical letter I get now so they understand it is a physical health issue and not a mental health/behaviour issue which I think they are inclined to believe. So much of what’s happening in our children’s bodies is internal and all they see is the resulting behaviour. I’m pleased to get some responses about hypermobility. I’m convinced there is a connection. X
