Constant leakage

Can anyone help?! My daughter has suffered with withholding since starting school, she’s now 10 and recently went 6 weeks without doing anything. We eventually managed to disimpact her and after two weeks she’d pretty much stopped leaking, just a small amount coming out and she was managing to pass small stools when she went to the toilet. However, after being like this for a week this week she’s gone back to being almost as bad as when we disimpacted her! The poor girl can’t seem to keep anything in, she says she doesn’t feel like she needs to go and doesn’t realise there’s a problem until she feels uncomfortable.

What should we do? I had to stop her going swimming with school on Friday, which her teacher wasn’t happy about, and she came home from guides last night absolutely covered! Would I be out of my mind to give her something like Imodium??

Hi.

I was told that when they with hold the signal to the brain that they need to got stops getting through and you need to retrain it. Apparently because that signal is malfunctioning the sphincter muscle is constantly tight. The leakage is when the muscle get tired. It's been suggested to me to encourage her to go to the toilet 20-30 mins after eating even if she doesn't feel like pooing. Make sure she sits for at least 5 mins.

We've had some success with that. Loads of times she's moaned about not needing but when she does there is a lot of poo. It's also reduced the number of accidents she's been having. Hopefully this will train her body into a routine now.

This is and continuation of movicol clear out and I'm hoping We're on to a winner! Good luck.

Ps I'd avoid immodium. Definitely speak to the doctor first.

Thank you. I’ll try that. We’ve got our first appointment with a consultant on Tuesday so hopefully they’ll be able to help. The doctors I’ve spoken to have been useless sadly.

You could try getting her to a toilet about 20 mins after meals to 'drain.' Of course kids cannot hold in runny poo. You could try oral epsom salts instead of the Movicol. The food grade kind.

Sounds like you need to look at the maintenance dose of movicol she’s on following disimpaction, it may be too low. You might need to disimpact again and then try a higher maintenance dose eg 4-6 sachets daily tapered down gradually until you can get her to 3-4 sachets daily. The movicol dosage is tricky and you have to monitor the poo daily with the Bristol stool chart, I find. My son recently got blockaded again so we had to up the movicol dose quickly and now we’ve increased his maintenance dose. Good luck X
