Stoma babies

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post. I wanted to ask if anyone has had a baby with a stoma/anorectal malformation? Our 4 month old baby boy is coming up to his second operation, having had the first at 1 day old, and I'd love to talk to other families who have been/are going through a similar journey.

Thanks,

Joanna

Hi Joanna,

Our son was born with a similar (possibly the same?) condition in Sept 2014. He also underwent surgery within 24hrs of birth to create a stoma with the repair done at 4 months and closing of the stoma at 6 months. There were several procedures over the following year or so for dilation but that side of things appears to be ok now.

We were warned that toilet training would take longer and that's definitely been the case. We started last Easter and we're still having soiling issues today. That has got better though in the last week or so as we've introduced senna as a result of recently discovering this website and consultation with his doctor. It's still difficult but we find that if we can get him to 'go' in a morning before nursery he'll be clean for much of the day. Of course it's easier said than done when your 3 year refuses to comply and you need to get to work :)

Feel free to message me. I'll be happy to answer any questions you have that I can help with.

Hi Joanna

My son was born with imperforate anus in May 2017, he is now 11 months. He initially had an anoplasty done when he was a few days old but unfortunately the wound broke down & he had to have a stoma to let his anus heal. He had the reversal op when he was 4 months old and we did regular dilations until he was about 7 months. We were told abt long time effects of constipation & incontinence but we are taking one day at a time. I hope everything goes well with your sons op & if there is anything you want to ask you are more than welcome to

Hello

My son was born with an imperforate anus in Feb '15. He had a Stoma at 3 days old, his anoplasty at 6 months and his Stoma reversal at 17 months. Due to hospital delays it took longer than expected for his surgeries. We had to perform his anal dialations for a year due to his scar tissue not hardening as quickly and was told chances were likely that he'd be incontinent.

We started potty training in October and he's done amazingly. He soils occasionally if he doesn't make it to the toilet quickly enough, more when out and about, and diarrhoea is going to be an issue but he's by far smashing all of our expectations. Our goal was getting him clean by school age and he very rarely soils at nursery.

If you have any questions or would like to chat please feel free to message me.
